Bassey is Big Time:
2015 Pangos All-South Frosh/Soph Camp Report

by Dinos Trigonis
(October 17, 2015)

The 10th annual Pangos All-South Frosh/Soph Camp presented by Ball is Life was held recently (October 10-11) at the MAC Sports Center (Lewisville TX/Dallas area). This sold-out event featured 175-plus top 2018 and 2019 prospects (along with a few talented 2020 players) from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri, Kansas, California and New Mexico.  The camp began with an excellent skills work-out directed by former Texas Tech head coach Chris Walker and continued with four competitive rounds of games that showcased the quality of the young talent present.  Media/scouts on hand included Dinos Trigonis (Fullcourt Press & Nothing But Net Magazine), Frank Burlison (BurlisonOnBasketball.com/McDonald’s All-American Game voter/NBPA Camp Selection Committee), Van Coleman (The Basketball Channel/McDonald’s All-American Game voter/NBPA Camp Selection Committee), Ronnie Flores (GrassrootsHoops.net & Ball is Life), Fran Fraschilla (ESPN), Alan Branch & Colin Campbell (Texas Basketball Weekly/LoneStarPrepSpotlight.com), Glenn Smith (DFW Metroplex Hoops), Jimmy Hicks (RCSSports.com), Stacy Houston (PlayingHoops.com),

Brad Hensley (BallisLife.com), Chad Groth (Area Codes Basketball), Chris Walker (CBS Sports Network), Sean Ceglinsky (Nothing But Net Magazine), Charles Campbell (HoopDFW.com), Ani Umana & Rod Clark (Texas Basketball Weekly) and Ladel Hill (MidMajorHoopsReport.com).

The top 60 players were selected by the camp staff and media present and were showcased in the two “cream of the crop” games held at the conclusion of the event.  In the Top 60 Game, it was the White squad roaring past the Black team 120-74 as 6’0” 2018 Max Abrams (Jesuit/Dallas TX) connected on four of the White team’s ten “3-point” shots.

In the Top 30 Game, it was 6”6” 2018 LaDarius Marshall’s steal and driving “And 1” with 13 ticks left to push the Black squad past the White team 95-94.  Marshall (16 points/10 rebounds) and 6’9” 2018 Franklin Aguananne (Denton/Denton TX) (who contributed 16 points/15 boards to the Black’s squad “W”) were named Top 30 Game co-MVPs.  6’2” 2019 PG Zarek Thomas (Cedar Hill/TX) added 18 points for the Black.  For the White team, overall camp Most Outstanding Player 6’10” 2019 Charles Bassey (St. Anthony/San Antonio TX) had a very impressive 20 points, 8 rebounds and 6 blocks.

While this is a recap of the camp, please keep in mind that this is a very early look at underclass prospects that have much room for future growth and are all “unfinished” products.

Below, we will highlight the players that were selected to the Top 30 game as well as list Top 60 Game selections and other “honorable mention” camp players (players who performed well enough to play in the all-star games but due to space limitations did not).

Top 30 Cream of the Crop Game Selections
(in alphabetical order)

*           Franklin Aguananne          6’9”     2018   Denton (Denton TX)
Strong and physical PF showed nice signs of a back-to-basket offensive post game (used a soft hook shot several times for buckets as well as facing-up to score up to 17 feet).   Formidable rebounder and interior defender had an impressive double/double (16 points/15 boards) in Top 30 Game.  Very good student.

*           Charles Bassey                  6’10”  2019   St. Anthony (San Antonio TX)
Nigerian import just got here this past summer and he has wasted no time in making a huge mark on the national scene.  Bassey’s play here was simply sensational!  Charles has the talent to make game-changing plays at both ends of the floor.  This year’s camp MOP is an off-the-charts above-the-rim finisher with amazing timing as a shotblocker.   Charles has great footwork on the block, can handle the ball very well in the open court for his size and also exhibited legit range on his jump shot.  Bassey had a game-high 20 points in the Top 30 Game to go along with 8 rebounds and 6 blocks.  Good student has made a very strong argument for being 2019’s #1 prospect!

*           Israel Barnes                       6’4”     2018   Southeast (Wichita KS)
Skilled wing handles it well in the open court and has very nice slashing scoring ability.

*           RJ Cammack                       6’9”     2018   Grace Prep (Arlington TX)
Strong PF is a regular visitor on the glass and a very capable scorer down low.  I really like the improvement in his game and body since last year.

*           Josiah Carmichael             6’4”     2019   Dunham (Baton Rouge LA)
Promising young wing with plenty of skill and upside.  One to track!

*           Sam Chapui                         6’1”     2019   Fall Brook Prep Academy (Houston TX)
Terrific young floor general has national scout Frank Burlison envisioning him as a national Top 20 caliber prospect.

*           Jalen Crutchfield                6’2”     2018   North (Norman OK)
Smooth off-guard with a silky 3-point stroke is the son of Oklahoma assistant Chris Crutchfield. Frank Burlison deemed him the “best deep jump shooter in camp.

*           Shawn Feggett                   6’5”     2018   Bishop Dunne (Dallas TX)
Wing with good size has excellent mid-range game.

*           Shawn Fudge                      6’2”     2019   North Little Rock (North Little Rock AR)
Scoring lead guard is shaping up nicely as 2019 HM target.

*           Gregory Hawkins               6’8”     2018   Hale (Tulsa OK)
Very long power forward is active on the glass and a very dependable rim protector.

*           Feron Hunt                           6’5”     2018   Triple A Academy (Dallas TX)
Athletic WF runs court very well and can finish with regularity in transition.

*           Tyrus Johnson                   6’4”     2018   Ryna (Denton/TX)
Sleek WF is a skilled attacker off the bounce with respectable range on his jump shot.

*           Tauriawn Knight                6’1”     2018   Edmund Santa Fe (Edmund OK)
Talented lead guard with quick ball skills is also an excellent defender.

*           Joshua LeBlanc                 6’6”     2018   Madison Prep (Baton Rouge LA)
Athletic hybrid forward finishes well in transition and can wreak havoc on the glass.  Love his long-term potential.

*           LaDarius Marshall              6’6”     2018   Forest Hill (Jackson MS)
Monster wing has a great blend of power and athleticism!  Tends to finish with authority everything he gets his hands on the paint.  Underrated outside shooter will only get better with hard work.  Marshall’s terrific play (and resulting buzz) on Day 1 of this camp resulted in Mississippi State’s Ben Howland wasting no time in officially offering him later on that evening.  LaDarius capped off an impressive camp with 16 points and 10 boards including the winning bucket in Top 30 Game (earning co-MVP honors of that contest).  Going to be a SEC dog fight for his services.

*           Colton Martin                       6’5”     2018   Flower Mound (Flower Mound TX)
Hard-work pays off for Martin as he went from Honorable Mention (and not making any all-star game) in 2014 to a well-deserved spot in the Top 30 Game this year.  Martin plays with great energy and his excellent basketball instincts allow him to be a factor baseline to baseline.  Deceptive athlete is an underrated rebounder.

*           Rodrick “RJ” Maso            5’11”  2018   DeSoto (DeSoto TX)
Solid playmaker handles pressure well and does not turn over the rock.  Fine passer too.

*           Zakee Morgan                     6’1”     2019   Spruce (Balch Springs TX)
Very good ballhandler makes sound decisions.

*           Chris Mullins                       6’4”     2018   Mansfield-Timberview (Mansfield TX)
Smooth shooting guard is creative off the bounce and has legit 3-point range.  Underrated defender had 13 points and 4 steals in Top 30 Game.

*           Ousmane Ndim                   7’0”     2018   St. Louis Academy (St. Louis MO)
Raw center with excellent size is a tenacious shotblocker and defender whose skill set is a work in progress.

*           Chandler Owenby              6’7”     2018   St. Paul’s (Covington LA)
Rangy combo-forward has nice perimeter scoring ability.

*           Cameron Phillips                6’0”     2018   Columbia (Huntsville AL)
Outstanding combo-guard prospect is equally effective setting the table for teammates as he is scoring at a high clip!

*           Jordan Phillips                    6’5”     2018   Grace Prep (Arlington TX)
Big wing is athletic and can finish through contact on his drives to the rack.  HM upside.

*           Enzo Sechi                           6’5”     2018   Taylor (Katy TX)
Physical combo-forward is a tenacious defender.

*           Chris Smith                          6’8”     2018   Country Day (Forth Worth TX)
Skilled swingman with nice length and more than adequate bounce was among the top 4 players here.  Smith is quick in transition, handles the ball very well for size and has respectable range on his perimeter shot.  DFW’s top 2018 prospect had 9 points/10 rebounds in the Top 30 Game.  Very good student will attract HM interest coast to coast.

*           Tyreek Smith                       6’8”     2019   Advanced Preparatory Int’l (Dallas TX)
Assertive and athletic forward is a beast on the boards.  Had 8 pts/9 rebs in Top 30 Game.

*           Zarek Thomas                     6’2”     2019   Cedar Hill (Cedar Hill TX)
Outstanding freshman PG prospect has yo-yo handle and ability to escape ball pressure.  Thomas (the younger brother of another Top 30 Game selection Zack Thomas) had an impressive 18 points in Top 30 Game.

*           Zack Thomas                      6’1”     2018   Cedar Hill (Cedar Hill TX)
Excellent ballhandler has real ability to create for himself and teammates.  Thomas eludes most defensive pressure with ease and is a fine passer.

*           Derrick Walter                     6’3”     2018   Midwest City (Midwest OK)
Savvy guard with deep perimeter range.

*           Emmanuel White                6’4”     2018   Bush (Ft. Bend TX)
Power wing is tough and can score in traffic.

*           Larry Wise                            6’4”     2018   Waxachachie (Waxachachie TX)
Assertive off-guard was effective finishing through contact on drives to the cup.
