Hamilton Sparks The Hood to 15th Annual Fullcourt Press Fall Hoops Classic Title

                (September 18, 2007)

The Hood, behind the scoring touch of tourney MVP 6’7” junior Jordan Hamilton (Dominguez/Compton CA) defeated the defending tourney champions Summit Prep (formerly Stoneridge School) 88-82 to capture the 15th annual Fullcourt Press Fall Hoops Classic’s Gold Division title this past weekend at Lynwood HS( Lynwood CA).  Past MVPs of this event include Paul Pierce (Boston Celtics), Rashard Lewis (Seattle Supersonics) and Tyson Chandler (New Orleans Hornets).

In the title game, The Hood (composed primarily of Dominguez HS players) was propelled by Hamilton’s 34 points (including three “three pointers”) while 6’7” junior  Aaron Moore chipped in with 19 points (on 6/9 shooting).  Summit Prep was led by 6’7” senior James Haarsma’s 20 points while 6’2” senior Cosmo Morrabi (18 points) and 6’10” senior Kyle Barone (16 points/12 boards) contributed for the Gladiators.

The Hood got to the final by knocking off a young, but very talented California Supreme squad (92-78) in the semi-finals.  Cal Supreme was led by the underclass trio of 6’10” soph Jeremy Tyler (San Diego/San Diego CA), 6’6” junior Solomon Hill (Fairfax/Los Angeles CA) and 6’1” soph Gary Franklin (Mater Dei/Santa Ana CA).  Tyler (ranked #1 in the Class of 2010 by Rivals.com) was arguably the most dominant interior player in this event and his 28 points/13 boards in the semi-finals helped bolster that claim.   Franklin knocked down 29 points against The Hood’s pesky defense (including an eye-popping 8 “threes”) while Hill showed all tourney long that he may be among the most underrated 2009

prospects on the West Coast.  Behind Tyler’s 23 points and Hill’s 22 points, Cal Supreme knocked off a strong Branch West-Team Reebok team led by 6’2” junior Abdul Gaddy (Bellermine Prep/Tacoma WA/committed to Arizona) and 6’8” junior Colin Borchert (Mountain Ridge/Glendale AZ) in a quarterfinal game 90-78.

Summit Prep’s road to the championship game included a semi-final battle with a talented Belmont Shore team featuring ultra athletic 6’6” senior Demar DeRozan (Compton/Compton CA), 6’8” senior Renaldo Woolridge (Harvard-Westlake/North Hollywood CA), 6’2” junior point guard Darius Morris (Windward/Los Angeles CA) and 6’6” senior Leonard Washington (Marshall/Compton CA).   6’6” senior Nigel Ajere (38 points) and 6’6” senior JP Olukemi (24 points/7 assists) combined for 62 points to help Summit Prep nip Belmont Shore 88-86 despite DeRozan’s 23 points/6 rebounds/9 assists, Woolridge’s 22 points (on 9/14 shooting with 4 “threes”), Washington’s 23 points (on 10/15 shooting) and Morris’ 12 points/7 assists.

National and regional recruiting scouts that attended this year included Frank Burlison (Long Beach Press-Telegram & Scouthoops.com), Dinos Trigonis (Fullcourt Press), Gerry Freitas (Freitas Hoop Review), Etop Udo-Ema (Fullcourt Press & Hoop Masters), Joel Francisco (ESPN), Greg Hicks (Scouthoops.com), George Dohrmann (Sports Illustrated), Alan Utter (Hoop Scoop), Dave Keefer and Dave Rogahn (CaliforniaPreps.com) and Nick Koza (SportsAmp.com) as well as college coaches from Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal Poly Pomona, San Francisco State, Westmont and Hamline (MN).

2007 Fullcourt Press Fall Hoops Classic
All-Tourney Team

All-Tourney – First Team

Jordan Hamilton       6’7”     Jr.        Dominguez (Compton CA) (MVP)

Arguably as skilled a scorer as currently exists on the West Coast, Hamilton was a consistent offensive force for The Hood all tourney long.  Hamilton’s current list includes Texas, Arizona, Washington, USC, UConn, Cal and North Carolina State.

Nigel Ajere                 6’6”     Sr.       Summit Prep (Simi Valley CA)
Undersized power-forward is a tough option to deal with in the paint and his 38 point eruption against Belmont Shore in the semi-finals showed he could score against high-major competition.

/i/o Fall Hoops C/DeMar_DeRozan.jpg

/i/o Fall Hoops C/Renaldo_Woolridge.jpg

Kyle Barone               6’10”   Sr.       Summit Prep (Simi Valley CA)

Long center has a nice perimeter stroke and is an improved rebounder and interior defender.

Colin Borchert          6’8”     Jr.        Mountain Ridge (Glendale AZ)

Active and skilled forward is an athletic version of Brian Scalabrine (USC/Boston Celtics).  Arizona’s top 2009 prospect unofficially visited USC the day after the tourney.

Bryce Cartwright      6’1”     Sr.       Dominguez (Compton CA)

Rapidly improving playmaker is a guard whose stock is definitely rising!  Bryce’s 10 assists in the title game speaks volumes on his development as a floorleader.   Great perimeter defender (6 steals) is an excellent student too (3.5 GPA).

Demar DeRozan        6’6”     Sr.       Compton (Compton CA)
Fresh off a spectacular summer, DeMar continues to amaze as his 42 point outburst in pool play here clearly demonstrates.  Is there a better wing athlete in the country?

Gary Franklin             6’1”     So.      Mater Dei (Santa Ana CA)

Young lead guard with a lethal perimeter stroke is also an excellent defender.

Abdul Gaddy             6’2”     Jr.        Bellermine Prep (Tacoma WA)
Recent Arizona commit is not a slashy or smooth point but he is deceptively athletic and has good court instincts and a knack for making plays at both ends.

James Haarsma        6’7”     Sr.       Summit Prep (Simi Valley CA)
Strong and physical combo-forward showed up big for Summit in the title game (20 points).

Solomon Hill              6’6”     Jr.        Fairfax (Los Angeles CA)
Very improved combo-forward has nice all-around skills and is now a mid-major-plus prospect with potential to rise higher.

Ryan Kelley               6’4”     Sr.       Diamond Ranch (Diamond Bar CA)
Smooth lead guard has very high basketball IQ and the poise to be an effective floor leader on the D-I level.

Aaron Moore             6’7”     Jr.        Dominguez (Compton CA)
Emerging high-major combo-forward prospect is dramatically improved over a year ago.  Athletic and active around the basket, Moore also has the ability to make mid-range shots.

Darius Morris             6’2”     Jr.        Windward (Los Angeles CA)
Morris has quickly developed into arguably California’s #1 2009 PG prospect.  Although he can be inconsistent at times, the talent is definitely there to suggest high-major potential as his length and ability to take defenders off the dribble makes him a dangerous scorer both in transition and in the half-court.  Additionally as his athleticism and height continue to increase, Morris is positioned to become one of the nation’s top point guard recruits come next spring.   Excellent student (3.5 GPA) scored 25 points against Total Impact to help Belmont Shore claim 1st place in its pool.

JP Olukemi                6’6”     Sr.       Summit Prep (Simi Valley CA)

Among the most underrated high-major prospects in the nation, nobody attacks the basket with more passion than JP.  Very good athlete has developed an accurate perimeter shot.

/i/o Fall Hoops C/Charles_Odum.jpg

Klay Thompson        6’6”     Sr.       Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita CA)
Smooth and polished wing has a nice stroke and a great feel for the game.  Good genes too (dad Mychal was a former #1 pick of the NBA draft -1978).

Jeremy Tyler             6’9”     So.      San Diego (San Diego CA)

Tyler is an emerging monster on the block with impressive post footwork and the potential to develop into an Amare Stoudemire-type power forward/center.

Leonard Washington  6’6”   Sr.       Marshall (Compton CA)

Athletic beast is a force to be reckoned with in the paint.  Kentucky, USC and Ole Miss are vying for his services – which could come as early as the 2nd semester of this upcoming basketball season.

Thurman Woods       6’5”     Sr.       Dominguez (Compton CA)
Very underrated forward has nice ability to use the glass to score and is a mid-major sleeper.

Renaldo Woolridge   6’8”     Sr.       Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood CA)

Woolridge continues to progress nicely as a player and his shooting exhibition in the semis (64% from the field with 4 “threes”) was very impressive.  USC, Georgetown, Tennessee, Illinois and Marquette make up his final 5 choices.

Honorable Mention – All-Tourney

Rodney Black            6’4”     Jr.        Valley View (Moreno Valley CA)

Black has good size for a wing, moves well and possesses an outside stroke that is sure to attract D-I interest next spring.

Avery Bradley           6’2”     Jr.        Bellermine Prep (Tacoma WA)

Very deceptive athlete can really get to the cup.  Forms (with Abdul Gaddy) the other half of what is arguably the West Coast’s top HS backcourt this upcoming season.

Tre Brewer                6’4”     Sr.       Etiwanda (Etiwanda CA)

Athletic wing has nice ability to drive to the basket and is a solid defender.  Scored 21 points against SCA in a pool play win.

Brett Bronder             6’3”     Sr.       Poway (Poway CA)

Agile wing is an effective slashing scorer.

Joe Burton                 6’8”     Jr.        West Valley (Hemet CA)

Damiene Cain            6’6”     Fr.       Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood CA)

Promising young “back-to-the basket” power forward has solid post moves.  High-major potential.

Anthony Cosentino     6’5”     Sr.       Otay Ranch (Chula Vista CA)

Big wing is equally comfortable shooting or slashing to score.

Quamayne Crymes   6’4”     Sr.       Joel John (Los Angeles CA)

Strong and athletic wing can finish in traffic.

Dominique Dunning  6’3”     Fr.       Santiago (Corona CA)

One of SoCal’s top frosh, Dunning is a lefty wing with a smooth stroke, immense passion for the game and a great attitude.

Tyler Fricke               6’5”     Sr.       Mt. Carmel (San Diego CA)

Skilled combo-forward runs floor well and can knock down the “three” ball.

Chris Gabriel             6’10”   Sr.       J Serra (San Capistrano CA)

Another underrated Dominguez D-I prospect, Green has a strong build and the ability to knock down outside shots.

Cezar Guerrero         5’11”   Fr.       St. John Bosco (Bellflower CA)

Arguably SoCal’s top frosh PG, Guerrero has a 5th gear with the ball and the ability to finish those trademark explosive bursts to the cup.

Jessee Hazely           6’7”     Jr.        Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita CA)

Active power forward doesn’t mind mixing it up down low.

Mark Hills                   5’10”   Jr.        University City (San Diego CA)

Quick point has nice ability to beat defenders off the dribble.

Casey James             6’4”     So.      J Serra (San Capistrano CA)

Skilled wing has real scoring ability.

Dominick Lacoste     6’0”     Jr.        Dominguez (Compton CA)

Stedman Merritt        6’2”     Sr.       Summit Prep (Simi Valley CA)

Sturdy combo-guard has a legitimate three-point stroke.

Crafty point is quick with the ball and has real ability to find open teammates.
