2007 Fullcourt Press All-West Camp
Cream of the Crop Top 25 Game Selections
by Dinos Trigonis
(July 17, 2007)
The 10th version of the Fullcourt Press All-West Camp came to a close last Thursday night in dramatic fashion when the Top 25 Cream of the Crop selections took the main court at Lynwood HS (Lynwood CA) and put on a show for the throng of fans in the stands as well as the dozens of college coaches and media sitting courtside including programs like UCLA, Arizona, Washington, Washington State, Oregon, Oregon State, Cal, Arizona State, Gonzaga and Boston College as well as national/regional scouts like Frank Burlison (Long Beach Press-Telegram & Scouthoops.com), Dinos Trigonis (Fullcourt Press), Joel Francisco (ESPN), Etop Udo-Ema (Fullcourt Press & Hoopmasters) and Dave Keefer and Dave Rogahn (California Preps). The level of talent on display again reaffirmed this event as the top regional camp in the West. A “mano y mano” duel between elite PG Brandon Jennings and upstart Las Vegas playmaker Leon Sutton was a fitting way to end the camp. Video footage of that battle and other Cream of the Crop game highlights will be available online soon at: www.Vootage.com
Below are the 2007 Fullcourt Press All-West Camp “Cream of the Crop game selections (in alphabetical order):
Larry Anderson 6’5” 2007 Jordan (Long Beach CA)
Athletic jumping jack is a bonafide Cedric Ceballos-type scorer that is exploring the option of prep school. Scored double figures (10 points) in this game. [Spent this eason at Winchendon Prep in MA and is being recruited by several D-1 schools]
Enoch Andoh 6’8” 2008 Mitty (San Jose CA)
Burly post loves to use his size (245 lbs) to claim position in the post. Nice post moves makes him a credible offensive option down on the block. Andoh (a very good student – 3.45 GPA) signed with Bucknell.
Colin Borchert 6’8” 2009 Mountain Ridge (Glendale AZ)
Fast-rising Class of 2009 post prospect is a more athletic version of Brian Scalabrine (USC/Boston Celtics). Borchert is an athletic power dunker as well as a skilled ballhandler and perimeter shooter. Elite programs like USC are already starting to recognize Colin’s talents and vast potential. Currently our choice as the #1 prospect in Arizona regardless of class.
Flynn Clayman 6’9” 2008 Maine Central Institute (Pittsfield ME)
Skilled forward with size has tremendous shooting range and can really fill it up when hot (as was the case at this camp). [This Los Angeles CA native’s play resulted in a scholarship offer from Colorado State where he played as a freshman this season.
Justin Cobbs 6’1” 2009 Bishop Montgomery (Torrance CA)
Cerebral point has a strong physique and is a solid ballhandler and creative floorleader. Cobbs has already been offered by USC.
Edward “EB” Davis 6’4” 2007 Lawrence Academy (Groten MA)
Younger brother of Minnesota Timberwolves guard Ricky Davis, “EB” is a strong and physical wing that also has nice ability to elevate. Showed well in this game (15 points/6 boards).
DeMar DeRozan 6’6” 2008 Compton (Compton CA)
We are running out of english language accolades to describe DeRozan – maybe Southern California’s best pro prospect since Tyson Chandler. Simply put………DeRozan is a very elite high major player and arguably as good as any wing in the country. After turning out the LeBron James Skills Academy earlier in the week, DeRozan scored 17 points and dished out 4 assists in this game with several dunks that left the crowd amazed. [USC signee and 2008 McDonald's All-American.]
Da’Shawn Gomez 6’0” 2009 Inglewood (Inglewood CA)
“Jack-of-all trades” kind of guard is not a true point or shooting guard………..just a damn good player. I love this kid’s energy and heart.
Jordan Hamilton 6’6” 2009 Dominguez (Compton CA)
Big time scorer has Chuck Person-type range on his lethal jump shot! Took center stage here determined to impress and didn’t disappoint as his game high 35 points (including 5 “threes”) and 8 rebounds attest. Made a strong statement for Top 10 national 2009 status.
Justin Hawkins 6'3" 2009 Taft (Woodland Hills CA)
Productive lead guard has a great knack for scoring. [Committed to UNLV.]
Jesse Hazely 6’7” 2009 Northwood (Irvine CA)
Active and bouncy power forward bangs the boards well (had 6 rebounds here) and the lefty has a nice touch on his jump shot with range to 17 feet. One of the West Coast’s best kept secrets……but not for too much longer.
Stephan Heard 6’6” 2009 Jordan (Long Beach CA)
Springy lefty swingman runs the floor like a gazelle and can really finish in transition. Very active defender and underrated shooter is a name that we will be hearing a lot when discussing the 2009 class next spring and summer.
Xavier Howard 6’5” 2008 Smokey Hill (Aurora CO)
Sleek and athletic wing has a quick stride and an impressive capacity to rise. A top Western sleeper in the 2008 class.
Ryan Howley 6’5” 2008 Sinagua (Flagstaff AZ)
Smooth wing has a finesse game with nice range on his jump shot as well as a vibrant bounce in his step. Play here was very impressive and his rising reputation is attracting legitimate D-I interest. [UC Davis signee.]
Brandon Jennings 6’2” 2008 Oak Hill (Mouth of Wilson VA)
Official Top 25 cream of the crop game stat line: 32 points/13 boards/5 boards/4 steals/4 turnovers. Those numbers seem to be the norm these days for Jennings. After his string of valiant efforts at the Arizona Cactus Classic, Pangos All-American Camp, NBPA Camp and Reebok U Camp, Jennings not only solidified his standing as the nation’s #1 PG, but also raised the question of whether he deserves serious consideration for the overall top spot as well. Next stops on the Jennings rock star tour: GBOA Challenge of Champions (July 19-21 @ Las Vegas NV) and Reebok Summer Championships (July 22-26 @ Henderson NV). [Arizona signee and 2008 McDonald's All-American is ranked #1 by ESPN.com]
Dana Kendrid 6’4” 2007 Edison Prep (Edison NJ)
Maybe as athletic as any 6’4” player not yet in college, Kendrid is a future ESPN Sports Center highlight regular in the making. The Las Vegas native is also a crafty scorer in the paint (10 points on 5/6 shooting here) and a consistent jump shot away from being a impact player at the mid-high major level. [Eastern Utah JC]
Genesis Maciel 6’9” 2007 Centennial (Compton CA)
Big post has real ability to stroke the perimeter jump shot, especially from the top of the key. [Attending Worcester Prep in MA where he is being recruited by several D-1 schools.]
Aaron Moore 6’7” 2009 Dominguez (Compton CA)
Athletic slashing scorer is really productive on the boards.
Jean Paul (JP) Olukemi 6’6” 2008 Stoneridge School (Simi Valley CA)
Rangy swing forward attacks the cup with force and can bury the outside jump shot too. Colorado is among the growing number of schools starting to recognize this high major “sleeper.” Scored double figures (11 points) here.
Robert Smith 6’0” 2009 Perris (Perris CA)
Savvy point is a clever playmaker that is quick as a cat and can shake off pesky defenders via his nasty cross-over dribble. As Hoop Scoop’s Clark Francis loves to say: if he were a stock……now is a good time to buy.
Michael Snaer 6’5” 2009 Rancho Verde (Moreno Valley CA)
Big 2009 wing has high-major strength and athleticism and the potential to be among the elite national wings in his class.
Leon Sutton 6’1” 2007 Spring Valley (Las Vegas NV)
One of the biggest surprises in the ten year history of the camp, Sutton stepped onto the All-West Camp stage and put on an electrifying display of passing. Fresno State, Colorado State and a growing number of mid-high major programs looking to get involved in a hurry with this extremely underrated PG. [Eastern Utah JC]
Leonard Washington 6’6” 2008 Thurgood Marshall (Compton CA)
Leonard is literally a “man playing with boys” as this Charles Barkely-type forward is a beast in the paint and a terror in transition. Leonard was virtually unstoppable in this game: 24 points on 10/13 shooting to go along with 7 boards. Kentucky, Ole Miss, Arizona, Arizona State and USC in the hunt for this stud.
Kendall Williams 6’2” 2010 Los Osos (Rancho Cucamonga CA)
Promising playmaker has high-major potential. Smooth ballhandler has a huge basketball IQ and the leadership personality and skills you would expect in an elite PG. [Committed to UCLA]
Tim Williams 6’8” 2008 Antioch (Antioch CA)
Athletic blue-collar post forward is starting to garner Pac-10 interest. Excellent rebounder and defender pursues the ball with passion. [St. Mary's signee.]
Renaldo Woolridge 6’8” 2008 Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood CA)
It is really all coming together for Renaldo as he followed up an eye-popping Reebok U Camp performance (made top all-star game there and considered by several national scouts to be one of the Top 6 prospects in attendance) with a 25 point (12/21 shooting) effort in this game. The bandwagon is starting to overflow as this big wing is now hearing from the likes of Arizona State, USC, Pepperdine, Georgetown, Marquette, Maryland, Texas, Louisville, UConn, Cal, Miami FL, Syracuse, Colorado, Boston College, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, UNLV, Michigan, Seton Hall, Oregon State, San Diego State, Portland and San Francisco. [Tennessee signee.]
Productive lead guard has a great knack for scoring.
