“Withey Re-Opens Recruitment”

(June 13, 2007)

7’0” rising senior Jeffree Withey (Horizon/San Diego CA) who had originally verbally committed to Louisville has had a change of heart and would now like to explore other options, thus opening up his recruitment again.  The West’s #1 post prospect played great at the recent Pangos All-American Camp in Los Angeles CA and 2008 McDonald’s All-American candidate is now attracting interest from the likes of Arizona, UCLA and Washington as well as Louisville……………..In late signing news, 5’10” Hank Thorns (Valley/Las Vegas NV) has signed with Virginia Tech, picking the Hokies over late interest from Virginia, Kentucky and Old Dominion.  Thorns is a BJ Armstrong-type guard that is an exceptional athlete for his size as well as having very good scoring skills.  Another late Sin City signing was 6’2” Michael Loyd Jr. (Palo Verde/Las Vegas NV) who inked with BYU.  Loyd (the oldest son of former UNLV star Michael Loyd) is an athletic lead guard that can score.  But the Loyd family hoops tree does not end there as there are two younger Loyd siblings that are Division I PG propects in their own right: 5’9” rising junior Kevin Loyd and 5’8” rising sophomore Jonathan Loyd……………..It is official: 6’6” Jordan Hamilton has checked out of Dorsey (Los Angeles CA) and has officially enrolled at Dominguez (Compton CA).  Hamilton has been considered as a Class of 2009 prospect ever since he attracted the interest of college coaches and media a few years ago, but it appears that he really has only 1 year left of California high school athletic eligibility making him now for all purposes a Class of 2008 recruit unless he attends a post-grad year starting in the Fall of 2008.  Hamilton just returned from France where he played with Linzy Davis’ Nike-sponsored touring team that participated in an international tournament………….…6’3” rising senior James Dean has transferred from Centennial (Las Vegas NV) to Hargrave Military Academy (Chatham VA).  Dean (an excellent student – 4.75 GPA) played well recently at the 2007 Pangos All-American Camp…………..The inaugural Reebok U Camp (the successor to the famed ABCD Camp) will be held at Philadelphia University (Philadelphia PA) on July 6-10 and several top West Coast players have been invited.   Players expected to attend include rising seniors 6’2” Brandon Jennings (Oak Hill Academy/Mouth of Wilson VA), 6’8” Drew Gordon (Mitty/San Jose CA), 6’4” Malcolm Lee (North/Riverside CA), 6’8” Troy Gillenwater (Stoneridge School/Simi Valley CA), 6’8” Renaldo Woolridge (Harvard-Westlake/North Hollywood CA), 6’6” Jordan Hamilton (Dominguez/Compton CA), 6’9” Matt Simpkins (Berkeley/Berkeley CA),  6’10” Andy Poling (Westview/Portland OR), 6’6” Tyreese Breshers (Price/Los Angeles CA), 5’10” Isaiah Thomas (South Kent CT/Tacoma WA), 6’5” Malik Story (Artesia/Lakewood CA) and 6’0” Dash Harris (Montverde FL/Inglewood CA) and rising junior 6’10” Renardo Sidney (Artesia/Lakewood CA)……….The inaugural LeBron James Skills Camp (Nike’s replacement for the Nike All-American Camp) will be held July 6-9 in Akron OH.  West Coast prospects expected to attend include 6’6” rising senior DeMar DeRozan (Compton/Compton CA) and rising junior twins Dave & Travis Wear (Mater Dei/Santa Ana CA)…………….It appears that Loren Grover’s tenure as the Artesia (Lakewood CA) head coach will last just one season as there are reports that he has resigned for undisclosed reasons.  Artesia (the defending California State Division III champions) is expected to return Renardo Sidney………..Mater Dei’s summer tourney will be held this upcoming weekend (June 15-17) at their brand new basketball facility with a field that includes the host Monarchs, Dominguez (Compton CA), Poly (Long Beach CA), Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita CA), Gahr (Cerritos CA), Los Alamitos (Los Alamitos CA) and JSerra (San Juan Capistrano CA)……...….Grassroots Basketball of America (GBOA) will host its inaugural GBOA Challenge of Champions on July 19-21 at Doolittle Recreation Center (Las Vegas NV). Top national elite teams scheduled to participate include Atlanta Celtics, Playaz Basketball Club (NJ), New York Panthers, DC Assault, Spiece Indy Heat, Illinois Warriors, New York Gauchos, Metro Hawks (NYC), Belmont Shore, Southeast Elite, D-I Greyhounds, Pump-n-Run Elite, Arkansas Hawks, Team Breakdown (FL), King of the Court (OH), EBO-EA Sports, Albany City Rocks (NY), Tony Squires (VA), Las Vegas Prospects and Sporting Chance (AZ).
