DALLAS, TX. Stoneridge Prep (Simi Valley, CA) traveled to Texas over the weekend and left with a perfect record (2-0) and earned two hard-fought victories over Cornerstone Christian (San Antonio), 82-77 and God’s Academy (Dallas) with a score of 79-74.
Stoneridge Prep has now won 5 of its last 6 games and is receiving strong performance from an increasing number of its players. The wins during this last period have been significant given that the team has been missing the services of its top player, Hamady N’diaye, for all but one of these games.
The game against Cornerstone Christian was a see-saw affair that was not determined until the final seconds of the game. Stoneridge Prep received huge efforts from center, Mamadou Diarra and point forward, Djibril Thiam. They both recorded double-doubles. Diarra scored 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while Thiam contributed 17 points (2 3-pointers) and a game high 12 rebounds and 6 steals. Herb Tanner continued his strong streak of scoring by notching 19 points while Shane Mahoney dished out 7 assists for the game while providing strong perimeter defense.
Guards Al Brown and Marvin Adams both provided sparks at the offensive and defensive ends. Brown scored 4 points in limited minutes while Adams chipped in with 8 points, including 2 3-pointers.
The game against God’s Academy was the tail of two halves with Stoneridge Prep rushing out to a commanding half-time lead of 43-27 only to see it evaporate at the end of the game. Point guard, Shane Mahoney’s 2 free throws with 4 seconds left in the game finally sealed the victory for Stoneridge in the 79-74 win.
The team’s scoring was again led by center, Mamadou Diarra, who had his second consecutive double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Herb Tanner came through again with clutch scoring notching 18 points while off guard Marvin Adams had 9 points (3 3-pointers).
Djibril Thiam and Shane Mahoney both had strong overall floor games. Thiam led the team with 12 rebounds, 8 points and 4 assists while Mahoney tallied a game-high 8 assists while scoring 8 points.
