Stoneridge Prep Finishes 1-1 at the Great Southern Showcase
Stoneridge Prep (Simi Valley, CA) finished 1-1 at The Great Southern Showcase held in Jackson, MS on January 26-29, 2006. The event featured some of the top prep schools in the country and was hosted by Genesis One (Mendenhall, MS).
Stoneridge Prep lost its opening game on Saturday against nationally ranked Boys to Men (Chicago, IL) by the score of 76-64 and then rebounded on Sunday with a hard-fought victory over Texas-based Heritage Christian, 61-60. The team played without the services of its top post player, Hamady N’diaye, who was nursing a sprained knee.
In the Boys to Men game, Stoneridge Prep received strong performances from a number of its players. The team had 3 players score in double figures with Herb Tanner once again leading the way with 17 points, including 3 of 7 3-pointers. Power forward, Mamadou Diarra, recorded a double-double, scoring 13 points with 11 rebounds. Guard, Djibril (Penny) Thiam chipped in with 10 points and point guard, Shane Mahoney, dished out 7 assists in the losing cause.
In the team’s win over Heritage Christian, Stoneridge Prep’s 3-point shooting was the difference in the game as they made 10 long-range shots. Herb Tanner led the group of four players that scored in double-digits. Tanner had 17 points including three 3-pointers, Marvin Adams scored 12 points (all on 3-point shots) and Mamadou Diarra contributed 10 points with a team-high 6 rebounds. Point guard, Shane Mahoney, had a good overall floor game notching 10 points (2 3-pointers) with 8 assists with 5 rebounds. The game see-sawed back and forth over the last 5 minutes and Stoneridge Prep received additional key contributions during that period on the defensive end by Djibril Thiam and on the offensive side of the ball by 7’1” Boubacar Sylla, who had 2 key baskets down the stretch.
Herb Tanner was named 3rd Team All Showcase by virtue of his strong play as he averaged 17.5 ppg for the event.
