Trigonis Tidbits

“SoCal Junior Class Not Very Big, But Is Deep at Perimeter Spots”
(January 27, 2006)

During the last Trigonis Tidbits, I reported three big recent commitments (Taylor King, Jamelle Horne and Quintin Watkins) and highlighted several other top SoCal juniors that were having big junior seasons.  Due to space limitations, several other deserving juniors were not mentioned, but I will focus on them here.

Tyrone Shelly                      6’6”     Crawford (San Diego CA)

Athletic wing forward attacks the basket with the best in the class!  Great ability to slash to the cup and has improved his jump shot.  Big time scorer (had a 76 point game this season – a San Diego-area record).

Jordan Block                       6’2”     Claremont (Claremont CA)

Terrific shooter has gotten better at putting ball on the floor.  While not a great athlete, Block is still a very good scoring combo-guard prospect.

Jesse Woodard                  6’2”     Centennial (Compton CA)

Strong and talented point-guard has missed most of season with foot injury.  Woodard is a streaky shooter and needs to improve shot selection, but has great court savvy.  Virginia Tech, Iowa State and USC among high-majors positioning themselves for his college services.

Chase Stanback                 6’6”     Fairfax (Los Angeles CA)

Skilled wing has nice length and shot but is somewhat soft and needs to improve defense.

Alex Jacobsen                    7’0”     Mater Dei (Santa Ana CA)

Huge center has struggled at times this season, but has made good improvement in recent months. Has decent touch around basket.   Committed to Arizona.

Tim Shelton                         6’7”     Clovis West (Fresno CA)

Talented forward has very versatile skills and is a national sleeper.  Sat out his sophomore year for recruiting irregularities after transferring from Bakersfield HS to San Joaquin Memorial.  Father is former NBA player Lonnie Shelton and older brother Titus plays at Cal Poly.

Darshawn McClellan          6’6”    Edison (Fresno CA)

Very physical, but undersized post player has great hands and is a load to deal with in the paint.

Daniel Hackett                     6’4”     St. John Bosco (Bellflower CA)

USC-bound and Italian-born Hackett was having a stellar year before he was sidelined by injury.  Excellent lead guard prospect has very high basketball IQ.  Father is USC assistant Rudy Hackett (played at Syracuse and professionally overseas).

Bryan Horton                      6’2”     Canyon (Anaheim CA)

Athletic and aggressive combo-guard has nice potential.

Tyler Bernardini                  6’6”     Parker (San Diego CA)

Skilled wing has size.  Outstanding student has improved his agility.

Pierce Brooks                     6’7”     Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks CA)

Brooks is having a very productive year after transferring from Taft.  Active inside, Brooks is a nice passer and has developed an accurate mid-range shot.  Great kid!

Kenton Walker                    6’8”     Scripps Ranch (San Diego CA)

Long and active power forward runs floor well and is effective on the glass.

J’Shon Hampton                5’11” Fairfax (Los Angeles CA)

Spunky combo-guard gets a lot done and is an excellent defender.  Needs to improve point guards skills and decision-making to have a shot to play above low-major level.

Jon Reed                              6’5”     Peninsula (Rolling Hills CA)

Lefty is a great shooter with range.  Nice build and good student.

Carlon Brown                      6’3”     King (Riverside CA)

Sweet-shooting lead guard has nice poise.

Cheyne Martin                     6’2”     Laguna Beach (Laguna Beach CA)

Sharp-shooting lefty has returned to original HS (after spending sophomore and start of junior years at Santa Margarita) due to medical illness.  Can really score when hot and is an underrated ballhandler and passer.

Brandon Richardson        6’1”     Hawthorne (Hawthorne CA)

Talented combo-guard has nice D-I potential.   Excellent ability to take defenders off the dribble.

Alex Tucker                          5’11”  Redondo Union (Redondo Beach CA)

Crafty and slick point has nice playmaking skills.   Definite SoCal sleeper.

Mark Hall                               5’10”  Loyola (Los Angeles CA)

Speedy point can score.  Pumped in 32 points versus Chaminade (West Hills CA).

Kert’d Elisadez                   5’10”  Villa Park (Villa Park CA)

Heady PG knows how to run team and is a “tough as nails” defender.

Larry Anderson                  6’5”     Jordan (Long Beach CA)

Athletic wing forward is an impressive defender.

Matt DeWaal                         6’10”  Dominguez (Compton CA)

Project has nice size and has made decent improvement, but needs time to fulfill potential.

Bryan Emanuel                   6’2”     Mayfair (Lakewood CA)

Good looking combo-guard is one of Southern California’s best defenders.  Underrated scorer.

Kieran Ramsey                   6’4”     Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood CA)

Strong wing-forward has been hampered by injuries this year, but is a very good defender and improved shooter.

Perry Webster                     6’2”     Mission Viejo (Mission Viejo CA)

Very solid point is not exceptionally quick, but does make smart decisions and is a good passer.

AJ Gaspora                          6’1”     Artesia (Lakewood CA)

Underrated shooter and scorer has nice range on jump shot.

Hamid Ford                          5’11”  Animo (Inglewood CA)

Very good defender is an effective slashing scorer.

Cameron Jones                  6’3”     Los Alamitos (Los Alamitos CA)

Cousin of teammate Landry Fields, Jones is a rapidly developing combo-guard with a rock-solid handle and nice outside touch.  One to watch!

Jabari Trotter                       6’1”     Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood CA)

Ineligible for varsity competition last year after transferring in from Pasadena Poly, Trotter has wasted little time getting major minutes and putting up very respectable scoring numbers.

Matt Metcalfe                       6’3”     Brethren Christian (Cypress CA)

Very good perimeter shooter is an excellent student.

Taylor Begg                         6’2”     Diamond Ranch (Diamond Bar CA)

Savvy wing with nice pop from the perimeter.

Jean Harris                          61”      Los Angeles (Los Angeles CA)

Taft transfer is putting up big scoring numbers this year.

Troy Draves                         5’10”  Wilson (Hacienda Heights CA)

Quick combo-guard has nice scoring skills.

George Barbour                 6’7”     Torrance (Torrance CA)

Playing 2nd fiddle to UNC signee Deon Thompson, Barbour does not get much limelight, but is a solid rebounder with decent upside.

Matt Ballard                          6’7”     Trabuco Hills (Mision Viejo CA)

Athletic forward is a good rebounder.

Corey Fava                          5’10”  St. Margaret’s (San Juan Capistrano CA)

Very good passer is one of SoCal’s top assist leaders.

Garrett Green  6'9"   Taft (Woodland Hills CA)

Talented forward has nice package of skills and athleticism.  Very nice upside!
