Former Belmont Shore Star Makes Los Angeles Lakers Roster
6'4" point guard Darius Morris has survived the final cut of the Los Angeles Lakers and will begin the NBA season on the team's 15 player roster. Morris, selected # 41 in the 2011 NBA Draft 2nd Round out of Michigan, had 11 points, three rebounds and three assists in 24 minutes in the Lakers' 114-95 loss to the Clippers on Monday.
At Michigan, Morris (as a sophomore) was an all-Big 10 selection, one of the nation's leaders in assists and led the Wolverines deep into the NCAA tourney where they lost to Duke by just one bucket. As a player at Windward HS in Los Angeles CA, Morris was an All-CIF selection that led his squad to a CIF State title as a senior. Morris played club ball with Belmont Shore where he played with the likes of Brandon Jennings (Milwaukee Bucks), DeMar DeRozan (Toronto Raptors), Kyle Fogg (Arizona), Renaldo Woolridge (Tennessee) and Cezar Guerrero (Oklahoma State). In July 2007, Morris teamed with Jennings in the backcourt to lead Belmont Shore to the Reebok Summer Championships title in Las Vegas - besting Team Breakdown (Miami FL) and Brandin Knight (Kentucky/Detroit Pistons), Kenny Boynton (Florida) and Eloy Vargas (Kentucky). Earlier that same year, Morris, Jennings and DeRozan propelled Belmont Shore to the finals of the Arizona Cactus Classic - losing 102-96 to the New York Gauchos and tourney MVP Kemba Walker (Charlotte Bobcats/UConn - 2011 National Champions).
Morris was also a Top 25 selection at the 2007 and 2008 Pangos All-American Camps and invited to the 2008 Nike LeBron James Skills Academy.
