2010 Fullcourt Press Spring League: Report I

(March 3, 2010)

The 2010 Fullcourt Press Spring League tipped-off last Sunday (February 28th) at Cabrillo HS (Long Beach CA) and consisted of 9 individual (“Select”) teams as well as 18 club (“Elite”) squads such as Belmont Shore, Compton Magic, California Supreme, Stoneridge Prep, Team Ariza, NOC Stars, CABC, Belmont Shore Seniors, High Desert Heat and Terminators with other squads like Team Odom, Pump-n-Run Attack, Team Bluechip and Belmont Shore Gold scheduled to join them in the near future.  Media on-hand on opening day included Dinos Trigonis (Fullcourt Press, Hoop Scoop & Nothing But Net), Dave Keefer (CaliforniaPreps.com), Sean Ceglinsky (Nothing But Net) and Matt Rodriguez (Ballislife.com).

There are many talented players participating.  Below are several of those top performers:

Enes Kanter                                         6’11”    2010     Stoneridge Prep (Simi Valley CA)
Kanter is a bigger post version of Tyler Hansborough and a man playing with boys at the high school level.  Dominant interior player has great strength that allows him to overpower defenders inside and an underrated outside shot that makes him a tough match-up.  Kanter had committed to Washington in December but it appears that his recruitment has opened up and Kentucky is now making a major push (visited the Wildcats last month).  Scored 31 points against CABC.

Cezar Guerrero                         6’0”      2011     St. John Bosco (Bellflower CA)

Creative point guard sat out this season after transferring back to his original high school and CJ did not waste time lighting up the scoreboard.  Cezar scored 37 points vs. West Coast Academy and also displayed pin-point passing ability (dished out 7 assists).

Tshilidzi Nephawe                                6’9”      2010     Stoneridge Prep (Simi Valley CA)

Mammoth PF is very physical in the paint and is a deceptively good post scorer on the block.

Steve Thornton                                    6’6”      2010     Stoneridge Prep (Simi Valley CA)

Agile swingman is capable of knocking down three-point shots with regularity as well as finishing his acrobatic drives to the basket.

Kevin Panzer                            6’8”      2010     Capistrano Valley (Mission Viejo CA)

Very good student has the size and range on his jump shot to be a coveted spring signee.

Garrett Frick                             6’7”      post     Air Force Prep/Santa Monica CA

Skilled combo-forward with accuracy on his three-point shot attended Air Force Prep in Colorado Springs CO this school year after a very solid high school career at Santa Monica HS but has decided to not pursue a military career path and is now looking for other D-I opportunities.  Very good student and excellent young man.

Clint Bozner                                         6’7”      2010     Villa Park (Villa Park CA)

Scoring forward with much bounce has the strength to bang inside as well as the necessary range on his jump shot to venture out to the perimeter.  Excellent student.

David Andoh                            6’7”      2012     St. Teresa (San Jose CA)

Athletic combo-forward has great hands and footwork and is an emerging name in this Western and national class.  Assertive rebounder and defender.

Daniel Cheek                            6’3”      2011     Corona del Mar (Newport Beach CA)

Sleek off-guard is a very dangerous slashing scorer and has the length and speed to be an excellent defender.  One of Orange County’s and SoCal’s most underrated junior prospects.

Brandon Porter                                    6’1”      2012     Pacific Hills (Los Angeles CA)

Athletic combo-guard is impressive on his drives to the cup (had one monster tomahawk dunk off the dribble that turned heads) and carries a very confident on-court persona.

Sharif Watson                          6’5        2011     Rowland (Rowland Heights CA)

Rangy wing is long and athletic with a very underrated outside shooting touch.  Scored 23 points in one of his league games last Sunday.

Christian Garrett                                   6’5”      2011     Oaks Christian (Westlake Village CA)

Crafty lead guard has very good size for a perimeter player (6’5” and still growing) and the basketball growth plate to continue to improve in all facets of his game.  Very good student.

Tony Bell                                             6’4”      2010     Cabrillo (Long Beach CA)

Very improved unsigned senior wing can score in a variety of ways.

Chris Baxter                                         6’3”      2010     Verbum Dei (Los Angeles CA)

Efficient off-guard has nice ability to penetrate defenses and is also very successful in the classroom too.

Braiten Madrigal                                   6’3”      2012     St. John Bosco (Bellflower CA)

Sharp-shooting wing-guard is also an excellent student.

Jovan Pearson                         6’5”      2011     Cabrillo (Long Beach CA)

Scrappy combo-forward plays with great energy on the defensive end.

Brandon Cunningham              6’1”      2011     Los Osos (Rancho Cucamonga CA)
Smooth combo-guard has a nice feel for the game.

Zach Pulig                                           6’3”      2011     Lakewood (Lakewood CA)

Solid wing is a consistently productive player.

Christian Verdugo                                6’2”      2010     Cabrillo (Long Beach CA)

Savvy point with good length has a dangerous 3-point stroke.

Van Holloway                           6’2”      2011     Righetti (Santa Maria CA)

Cerebral lead guard makes smart decisions and has a perimeter shot that must be respected.

Chass Bryant                            5’10”    2012     Oaks Christian (Westlake Village CA)

Quick PG with potent scoring ability – pumped in 32 points in one of his league games last Sunday.

Rodny Mendes                         6’2”      post.    San Joaquin Memorial (Fresno CA)
Strong Class of 2009 two-guard plays excellent defense and has nice spot-up shooting ability.  College clock has not started yet.

Andre Newman                         6’2”      2011     Ontario Christian (Ontario CA)
Versatile combo-guard is a fine passer and solid ballhandler.

Bo Abrams                                           6’7”      2010     Beverly Hills (Beverly Hills CA)

Rugged rebounder can score with his back to the basket.

Greg Karapoulios                                 6’5”      2013     Los Alamitos (Los Alamitos CA)

Hard-working post has soft hands and the work-ethic necessary to evolve into a player worth tracking.

Christian Wood                                    6’6”      2013     Los Alamitos (Los Alamitos CA)

Very long and wiry young “big” is extremely “raw” in many ways but has a nice shooting touch and the substantial upside for scouts to take notice.  Together with Karapoulios, Los Al has a future front court with lots of promise.

Joe Covarrubias                                   5’11”    2014     Whittier CA
Cousin of Cezar Guerrero is slowly establishing his own scorers reputation (had 21 points in one of his league games last Sunday.
