2010 Pangos Triple Crown Report

The inaugural Pangos Triple Crown held at Cabrillo HS (Long Beach CA) on November 20-21 featured 100-plus top 2015, 2016 and 2017 (and a few 2018) players from California and Nevada. The camp began with a terrific 2-hour skills clinic and continued with four competitive rounds of games that showcased the depth of the young talent present. The campers were also educated on the NCAA rules and guidelines, received a nutrition seminar by former Stanford All-American Carolyn Moos (carolynmoos.com) and had an opportunity to learn about the recruiting process from a panel of scouts that were present.

aaaSince this camp de-emphasized the concept of “rankings” of middle school players and they usually have very little real value at the youth level, I prefer to discuss the players here in clusters or tiers, recognizing that this camp was a “snap-shot” rather than a memoir on these players and their potential. Please keep in mind that is a very early look at a very young group of prospects that have much room for future growth and they are all “unfinished” products.

In light of the caveat above, there was an impressive crop of lead guards present at the 7^th and 8^th grade levels which bodes well for the future of SoCal basketball as well as a potential elite big man from Las Vegas who should garner recruiting attention from coast to coast.

In this report, we will highlight the top players (listed by alphabetical order) as well as note several other kids that performed well.

Son of former NBA player Nick Anderson is a long and well-built forward that is oozing with potential and has the drive and work-ethic to fulfill vast upside. Excellent rebounder and interior scorer.

Shane Cavanaugh             6’3”     8^th        St. Jane Francis (North Hollywood CA)
Excellent shooter with improved all-around skills plays very hard.

Blake Colquitt                     6’4”     8^th        Canyon Hills JHS (Chino Hills CA)
Tough and hard-nosed forward makes plays at both ends.

Tyler Dorsey                        6’4”     8^th        Ribet Academy (Los Angeles CA)
Austin Rivers-type lead guard is a multi-dimensional scorer that can produce lots of buckets in a variety of ways. Combination of terrific size and skill level for a guard so young makes him a future elite national prospect that will be recruited at the highest level. Arguably the #1 prospect at this event!

Robbie Feinberg                6’1”     8^th        Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth CA)
Strong wing showed that he could knock down shots from the perimeter – especially in the Top 25 game. Underratted defender is a terrific student (4.0 GPA).

Latrelle Franklin                  5’8”     8^th        Vail Ranch MS (Temecula CA)
Very quick point has an air-tight handle and the quickness off the bounce to give defenders fits all game long.
Franklin’s also possesses pin-point passing ability that provides teammates with plenty of scoring opportunities. Younger brother of San Diego State freshman PG LaBradford Franklin has already prompted scouts like ESPN.com’s Joel Francisco to compare his ball skills to a young Baron Davis.

Max Hazzard                        5’10” 8^th        Campbell Hall (North Hollywood CA)
Grandson of former UCLA great Walt Hazzard has a great feel for the game and the skill package to be a top guard in the national 2015 class. Good student has high-major potential.

Jeremy Hemsley                 5’8”     8^th        Alta Loma JHS (Alta Loma CA)
Long-armed wing is a dangerous slashing scorer and his length and high motor makes him an excellent defender .

Kwinton Hinson                 6’0”     8^th       Orr (Las Vegas NV)
Long lefty off-guard is an outstanding shooter and rangy defender. Excellent upside and great feel for the game.

Marcus Lovett                     5’8”     8^th        Odysee Charter (Altadena CA)
Quick and shifty playmaker is a night-mare match-up for opposing defenders. Terrific talent has a chance to be a special player!   Remember the name – Lovett is a real threat to be an elite West Coast 2015 prospect

Tommy McCarthy              5’6”     8^th        Rancho Santa Fe MS (Rancho Sante Fe CA)
Scrappy lead guard has a potent outside shot and is a tough competitor.

Isaiah McCullough             6’2”     8^th        Loving Savior Lutheran (Chino Hills CA)
Scott Cutley-type “jack-of-all-trades” forward is a model of productivity and gives maximum effort every time out.

Rex Pflueger                        6’1”     8^th        JSerra (San Juan Capistrano CA)
Very good shooter with excellent basketball instincts. Brother (Devon) is a top soph prospect at JSerra.

Mason Shepard                  6’5”     8^th        New Roads (Malibu CA)
Strong and athletic forward shined bright here – rebounding like Ben Wallace and finishing with authority (including a few impressive flushes). With a few more inches added to his already terrific physique, Mason will be a household name in this class.

Kahlil Simplis                      5’9”     8^th        Dana MS (Santa Monica CA)
Strong and burly combo uses strength well and is a very underrated scorer.

Kendall Small                      5’9”     8^th        Orangeview MS (Anaheim CA)
Crafty and confident PG plays with a killer’s instinct.   Small has an impressive handle and looks to be another promising lead guard prospect in this class.

Kendall Smith                      6’4”     8^th        St. Arbert (Bellflower CA)
Physical PF gets after it on the glass. If Smith grows and makes a concerted effort to improve his conditioning and attention span, he could evolve into a nice player down the road that is sure to attract college attention.

Eric Webb                             6’1”     8^th        Lincoln MS (Santa Monica CA)
Emerging wing prospect is a solid defender and improving offensive option. Very good student!

Chris White                          6’1”     8^th        Palms MS (Los Angeles CA)
Long swingman can finish in transition and is effective attacking the basket. Very improved player is the son of Roy White of Westcoasthoopsreport.com fame.

Stephen Zimmerman Jr.   6’8”     8^th        St. Anne (North Las Vegas NV)
Extremely skilled “big” can score both inside the paint as well as beyond the 3-point arc. Stephen moves very well for his size and is an underrated passer too. At this early juncture, Zimmerman is the top 2015 post prospect on the West Coast!

Tito Maddox-type lead guard is a strong and assertive playmaker that knows how to run a team.

Long and wiry floor-general plays with the confidence and intensity you would expect from top national prospects!   Water-proof handle and desire to compete against opponents much older make him a special player.   Next challenge for Thornton is to continue to evolve as a complete lead guard – making his teammates better and to be a real “triple threat” on the offensive end.

Physical forward rebounds with authority.
