2016 Pangos All-East Frosh/Soph Camp Report
by Dinos Trigonis
(November 21, 2016)

The 9th annual Pangos All-East Frosh/Soph Camp presented by Eastbay was held last month (October 29-30) at RiverWinds Center (West Deptford NJ/just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia).  This event featured a record 240 top 2019 and 2020 players (along with a few talented 2021 players) from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and North Carolina. This year’s edition of the camp was arguably the deepest and most talented since the East camp was established in 2009 (current San Antonio Spurs forward Kyle Anderson was named camp MVP that year).

Former long-time NCAA & NBA assistant coach Dave Miller (recently a NBA analyst for the Los Angeles Lakers Time Warner Sports Network) opened the camp with an excellent fundamental skills session and guest speakers included national scouts Van Coleman, Frank Burlison and Ronnie Flores.

Media/scouts on hand included Dinos Trigonis (Fullcourt Press, Pangos & Nothing But Net Magazine), Van Coleman (The Basketball Channel, Nothing But Net Magazine, McDonald’s All-American Game & NBPA Camp selection committees), Frank Burlison (BurlisonOnBasketball.com, McDonald’s All-American Game & NBPA selection committees), Ronnie Flores (GrassrootsHoops.net, BallisLife.com, “Fab 50” National HS Team Rankings & Mr. Basketball USA Tracker), Andrew Slater(247Sports.com), Dick “Hoop” Weiss (Blue Star Media),Tom Nguyen (BallisLife.com), Brian Flinn & Eric Hampford (Future 150), Van Johnson (Baseline Hoop Sports), Allen Rubin (Hoop Scoop), Jamie Boyer (8 Eye Sports), Littel Vaughn (Checkball Magazine), Rob Engemann (Elevate Hoops), Eric Watkins (VUSports.com/Villanova), Sam Rines (BasketballFinders.com), Dewain Clark (Diamond Eye Sports), Rodini Almonacy (ILuvBBall.com), Jacob Ross Schwartz (Voice of Reason), Randy Miller (The Miller Report) and Pernell Thompson (BallBoyHype.com).

Normally the camp’s top 60 players (selected by the media present) are showcased in the two “cream of the crop” games held at the conclusion of the event but this year the talent was so deep that we had to create a third “cream of the crop” contest (Top 90 Game).  Unfortunately, there was still not enough room for all of the worthy kids deserving to be in the three all-star games so I have listed those not honored as Top 30, Top 60 or Top 90 selections but nonetheless impressive, as camp “honorable mention” at the end of this report.  While this is a recap of the camp, please keep in mind that this is a very early look at underclass prospects that have much room for future growth and are all “unfinished” products.

BallisLife.com produced a camp video recap:  http://ballislife.com/raw-footage-high-major-talent-everywhere-at-pangos-east/

8 Eye Sports produced several individual highlights at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DdnUHQPGaw

In the Top 60 “Cream of the Crop Game” it was the Black team outlasting the White squad 88-82 as 6’0” 2019 Justin Paz (Bethlehem Catholic/Allentown PA), 6’10” 2019 Ray Sommerville (The Shipley School/Bryn Mawr PA), 6’9” 2019 Bernard Kouma (Redemption Christian/Troy NY) and 5’10” 2019 Fatayn Wesley(Imhotep/Philadelphia PA) stood out.

In the Top 30 Game, it was the Black team besting the White squad 106-99 as game co-MOPs 6’5” 2019 Bryce Willis had a team high 15 points and 6’9” 2019 Aidan Igiedon (10 points/6 rebs) dominated the paint for the winners.  Fellow Top 30 Game co-MVP 6’8” 2020 Mikeal Jones had a game-high 16 points for the White squad.

We highlight those players selected for the Top 30 Cream of the Crop Game below.

Top 30 Cream of the Crop Game
(in alphabetical order)

Jabri   Abdur-Rahim           6'6"     2020   Seton Hall Prep (Orange NJ)
Son of former Cal star and NBA forward Sharif Abdul-Rahim has the feel and poise of an emerging national star.  Jabri has a terrific all-around skill set that allows him to play multiple positions and was national scout Frank Burlison’s choice as the top freshman at the event. Jabri  attended the USA Basketball Junior mini-camp in early October.

Posh Alexander                  5'11"  2020   Our Savior Lutheran (Bronx NY)
Quick and crafty, Posh is a Yogi Ferrrell-type PG with plenty of sizzle in his handle that can create his own shot as well as penetrate defenses with swift precision.  St. John’s has already offered.

Cole Anthony                      6'2"     2019   Archbishop Molloy (Queens NY)
Son of former NBA PG and UNLV great Greg Anthony (who led the Rebels to their only NCAA championship) is a big-time playmaker in his own right. Nearly impossible to stop off the bounce, Cole not only can finish with thunder at the hoop but has legit 3-point range that creates havoc for opposing defenses. Ultra-confident playmaker is always in attack-mode.

Here are highlights of Cole’s MOP Camp performance:  http://ballislife.com/top-10th-grade-pg-cole-anthony-shows-out-at-pangos-all-froshsoph-east/

Impressive athletic guard is an above-average defender.

Jack Cavanaugh                6'3"     2019   Pope John XIII (Sparta NJ)
Sharp-shooting off-guard has deceptive bounce in his step as well.  “A” student too.

Justin Champagne            6'5"     2019   Bishop Loughlin (Brooklyn NY)
Strong and athletic forward attacks the basket with force and consistently finishes through contact.

Michael Christmas             6'6"     2019   Landstown (Virginia Beach VA)
Ultra-athletic wing forward is an Elgin Cook-clone that thrives in transition.  As his perimeter skills continue to improve, Christmas will be a sought-after ACC/Big East recruit.

Eric Dixon                            6'7"     2019   Abington (Abington PA)
Burly PF has the strength to seal and pin defenders inside and a soft touch he utilizes via an impressive jump hook.  Dixon is a regular visitor to the glass and legitimate double-double guy at the next level.  Dixon was invited to the USA Basketball Junior mini-camp in early October.

Hassan Drame                    6'5"     2019   Our Savior New American (Centereach NY)
Long, rangy athletic swingman is an improved shooter.  Good student is hearing from Rutgers, St. John’s, Oregon, Virginia, Villanova and Florida State.

Lynn Greer III                       6’2”     2020   Roman Catholic (Philadelphia PA)
Polished young floor-general has very nice court instincts and is the son of former Temple PG Lynn Greer Jr.  Very good student too.

Aidan Igiehon                      6'9"     2019   Lawrence Woodmere Academy (Woodmere NY)
Explosive PF with length hails from Ireland and was one of the most dominant performers at this camp – earning co-MOP of the Top 30 Game (10 points/6 rebs).  Strong as an ox inside, Igiehon has tremendous “catch & finish” ability and the physical prowess to disrupt opposing offenses.  Very good student is hearing from St. John’s, Villanova and Syracuse.

Tariq Ingraham                   6'9"     2019   Salesianum (Bear DE)
Wide-body power forward has the frame and bulk to bang inside and a nice touch when he gets his hands on the rock on the block.

Mikeal Jones                       6'8"     2020   Girard College (Philadelphia PA)
Versatile forward is athletic and a high-level scorer that projects as marquee Big East/ACC recruit.  UConn, Villanova and Temple are among the growing list of schools that would love his future services.

Athletic swingman and Jamaican import is a “jack of all trades” that is a very good student.

Justin Lewis                        6'7"     2020   Calvert Hall (Baltimore MD)
Big time WF has all the tools to be recruited at the highest level.  Swift in transition and skilled when he attacks the cup, Lewis is oozing with elite HM potential and a must-track national recruit.  Top 20 national prospect with potential to be much higher on the nation’s totem pole.

Jordan Livingston             6'3"     2019   Immaculate Conception (Montclair NJ)
Heady lead guard makes good decisions.  Just transferred to Immaculate Conception from Life Center (Burlington NJ).

Maxwell Lorca-Lloyd         6'9"     2019   Northfield Mt. Herman (Gill MA)
Long and skilled PF is agile baseline to baseline and can make plays at both ends.  Seton Hall, BYU and Penn State among the many schools recognizing his immense abilities.

Ismael Massoud                 6'7"     2019   McDuffie (Granby MA)
Skilled combo-forward moves well without the ball and has very nice spot-up shooting ability.  Massoud scored 10 points in Top 30 Game.

Quran McPherson              6'3"     2020   The Patrick School (Elizabeth NJ)
Terrific looking young combo-guard is athletic off the bounce and has the speed to cover opposing elite guards.  Like they say on Wall Street, now is a good time to buy stock in this HM player in the making.

Jason Murphy                     6'8"     2019   Chapelgate Christian (Marriottsville MD)
Active power forward is an excellent rebounder and post-defender.  Excellent student also has very nice face-up scoring ability.

Trey Patterson                    6'8"     2021   Rutgers Prep (Somerset NJ)
Outstanding young swingman with terrific length and skill package.  Have not seen most of the 2021 class yet but I can’t imagine that there are currently 5 guys in that class more talented and with greater potential than Trey.

Marvin Price                         6'6"     2019   Patterson (Baltimore MD)
Strong and athletic hybrid F can score with the best of them in this class.

Donta Scott                          6'7"     2019   Imhotep (Philadelphia PA)
Athletic combo-forward is productive on both ends of the floor and is a rugged rebounder and finisher on the block.  Top 100 potential.

Joe Toussaint                     5'11"  2019   Cardinal Hayes (Bronx NY)
Smooth PG makes sound decisions and has a very nifty handle that eludes defenders with ease.

Qudus Wahab                     6'11"  2019   Virginia Academy (Ashburn VA)
Very improved true back-to-the-basket center has a great motor and refined skills that make him a legitimate offensive threat in the paint.  Very good student is hearing from Clemson (offer), Temple and Virginia Tech.
