2011 Fullcourt Press All-Frosh/Soph Camp Report

by Dinos Trigonis
(October 5, 2011)

The 11th annual Fullcourt Press All-Frosh/Soph Camp that was held at the Players Edge (Corona CA) last weekend (October 1-2) featured 160-plus top 2014 and 2015 players (along with a few talented 2016 and 2017 ballers) from California, Arizona and Nevada.

The depth of the talent present had media/scouts raving about the future of West Coast high school hoops.

Media and scouts on hand included event co-director Dinos Trigonis(Fullcourt Press, Nothing But Net Magazine & Hoop Scoop), event co-director Etop Udo-Ema(Fullcourt Press & Hot100Hoops.com), Frank Burlison(BurlisononBasketball.com/McDonald’s All-American Game voter), Van Coleman(Hot100Hoops.com/McDonald’s All-American  Game voter), Ronnie Flores(ESPNRise.com), Joel Francisco(ESPN.com), Josh Gershon and Greg Hicks(Scouthoops.com), Christian Popoola(PremierBall.com), Roy White(IHigh.com), Chad Groth(WestCoastHoopsReport.com and Area Codes), Matt Rodriguez(BallisLife.com), Johnny Hernandez(BallisLife.com & Next Level Connect), Neal Nieves(Coast2CoastRecruiting.net) and Nick Koza(Sportsamp.com).

The camp’s top 60 players were selected by the camp staff and media in attendance and were showcased in the two “cream of the crop” games held at the conclusion of the event.

In the Top 30 Game, it was the White squad led by Camp MOP 6’6” Stanley Johnson (game high 21 points) and Top 30 Game co-MVP Tyler Dorsey (who was responsible for 9 of the game’s first 14 points en route to a 17 point effort) that propelled the White team to a decisive 126-91 win over the Black squad. Noah Robotham added 15 points/5 assists for the White squad while Gerad Davis scored 12 points and Top 30 Game co-MVP Marcus LoVett had 9 points and dished out 7 assists to lead the Black squad.

While this is a recap of the camp, please keep in mind that this is a very early look at underclass prospects that have much room for future growth and are all “unfinished” products.

Listed below are the Top 30 selections (listed by alphabetical order):

Top 30 Cream of the Crop Selections
(in alphabetical order)

* Sedrick Barefield 6’0” Fr. Chapparal (Temecula CA)
Hard-working floor general has excellent court instincts and ability to penetrate defenses to get to the cup and score. Father (Ray) played at San Diego State. Had 10 points/4 dimes in Top 30 Game.

 * Brian Beard Jr. 5’9” So. La Verne Lutheran (La Verne CA)
While it was Johnson and Dorsey sharing the scoring load for the Top 30 Game’s winning White squad, it was Beard who provided the overwhelming defensive effort that helped make the White team’s victorious effort a decisive one. “BB” is the best defensive guard in SoCal’s 2014 class and his improving lead guard skills also make him one of the region’s top soph PG prospects as well.

* Justin Bibbins 5’8” So. Bishop Montgomery (Torrance CA)
Cerebral lead guard is on the thin side but is a smart point and fine student.

* Jose Bustamonte 6’6” So. Peoria (Peoria AZ)
Agile “big” runs floor well and is active on the glass.

 * Shaquille Carr 6’0” So. Canyon Springs (Las Vegas NV)
Fluid floor-general is extremely quick off the dribble and his lethal first-step allows him to beat defenders off the bounce with regularity.

 * D’Quan Crockett 6’2” Fr. Clark (Las Vegas NV)
Athletic slasher had more than his share of impressive moments here.

* Gerad Davis 6’3” So. Canyon Springs (Las Vegas NV)
Slashing scoring wing plays hard and always seems to find a way to be involved in every play. Scored 12 points in Top 30 Game.

* Idrissa Diallo 6’10” So. Ribet Academy (Los Angeles CA)
Elite HM physique with an improving skill set makes him a “must-track” prospect in the 2014 class.

* Tyler Dorsey 6’4” Fr. Ribet Academy (Los Angeles CA)
Dorsey showed in the first few minutes of the Top 30 Game why I believe that he is presently as good as any guard in this national 2015 class as well as a real contender for the #1 overall spot. Scoring nine of his team’s fourteen points, Dorsey sparked the White squad to a 14-0 start and never looked back en routetoa 30 point win. Tyler has the skills and size to play both backcourt positions equally well and his overall versatility makes him very hard to guard.

* Trevor Dunbar Jr. 5’10” So. St. Ignatius (San Francisco CA)
Bay Area PG has a Norm-Nixon-type “yo-yo” handle and the vision and pin-point passing ability that gives him high value as a playmaking prospect.

* Fetai Eke 6’7” So. East (Bakersfield CA)
Long post runs floor extremely well and is very quick off his feet which makes him a legitimate shotblocker and rebounder.

* Fritz Eibel 6’4” So. La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad CA)
Tough swingman doesn’t mind being physical inside and attacks the basket with passion.

* Ke’Jhan Feagin 5’9” Fr. Poly (Long Beach CA)
Smooth floorleader has that “feel” that coaches love in a PG.

* Darryl Gaynor 6’2” So. Palo Verde (Las Vegas NV)
Athletic wing is an excellent defender.

* Patrick Hawkins 6’1” So. Cal Prep (Berkeley CA)
Hawkins laid claim early in the camp as the most intense and hardworking wing and he did not relent all weekend long. Contributed 10 points to White squad’s win in Top 30 Game.

* Razhaun Bear Henderson 6’5” So. Alemany (Mission Hills CA)
Lefty swingman is strong and physical and his very improved mid-range jump shot will attract mid-high major interest coast to coast. Bear appears to be on the verge of a break-out soph season this year.

* Rashad Jackson 6’3” So. Garces (Bakersfield CA)
Strongly built off-guard has a nice stroke and an overall skill package that projects Top 100 status.

* Stanley Johnson 6’6” So. Mater Dei (Santa Ana CA)
Strong and skilled Paul Pierce-type SF has a basketball IQ that is off the charts and his dominant performance here in both the camp games as well as Top 30 Game earned him Most Outstanding Player honors. The refinement of his jump shot and improved handles has taken his game to another level.

 * Elston Jones 6’9” So. Millennium (Goodyear AZ)
Big PF has terrific hands which allow him to catch the ball in the post with ease and his ability to finish with either hand impressed national scouts like Frank Burlison here. This lefty (an excellent student) reminds me of 2000 McDonald’s All-American Travon Bryant (Missouri/Greek Pro League).

 * Orr Leumi 6’1” Fr. Gorman (Las Vegas NV)
Skilled off-guard is an Israeli import that has range on his jump shot.

* Marcus LoVett 5’10” Fr. Providence (Burbank CA)
Marvelous playmaking prospect has a certain feel for the game that is difficult to teach. Decision-making is superb and the lefty’s outside stroke must be respected. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to recognize that his talents place him already among the best in the country in the 2015 class.

 * Derek Newton 6’6” So. Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood CA)
Crafty combo-forward finds ways to get on the scoreboard with an assortment of inside-out moves. Newton looks to bounce back in his upcoming soph year after missing most of last season with a shoulder injury.

* Nick Pallas 6’7” Fr. Tesoro (Coto de Caza CA)
Jon Brockman-type PF has good hands and a nice ability to finish in the paint.

* Nicholas Pete 6’6” Fr. Tahquitz (Hemet CA)
Strong and rugged PF is barely scratching surface of his immense potential.

* Tivon Plummer 6’1” So. Mater Dei (San Diego CA)
Energetic and athletic wing makes plays on both ends of the court.

* Noah Robotham 5’11” So. Gorman (Las Vegas NV)
Underrated PG knows how to run a team and can score better than most believe as his 15 points in Top 30 Game demonstrates.

* Christopher Sandifer 6’4” So. Price (Los Angeles CA)
Rapidly growing lefty SG has a game reminiscent of former Lynwood star and Nebraska guard Seketourne Henry (who played professionally in Japan last season). Scored in double figures (11 points) in Top 30 Game.

* Mason Shepard 6’6” Fr. Windward (Los Angeles CA)
Explosive power forward is a force on the glass and can finish high above the rim.

 * Namon Wright 6’3” So. Pacific Hills (Los Angeles CA)
Smooth SG has an impressive all-around game.

* Bono Zedan 6’6” So. Ribet Academy (Los Angeles CA)
Strong WF has legitimate 3-point range – scored 10 points in Top 30 Game.

* Stephen Zimmerman 6’10” Fr. Gorman (Las Vegas NV)
Very talented center has tremendous potential to develop into an elite post player at the next levels and his flashes of brilliance has inspired some to label him already as the top prospect in the 2015 class. Got banged up on Saturday and was not 100% on Sunday, but his skills and upside are too huge to ignore.

In the Top 60 Game 6’5” frosh Tyler Burch scored a game-high 21 points and Darius Hamilton added 16 points/11 boards to lead the Black squad to a 136-94 win over the White team. Nick Blair had 18 points/7 rebounds to lead his White squad. Burch is a Mike Dunleavy-type shooting forward with tremendous range and improving agility while Blair is an athletic wing that has promising upside. Other Top 60 Game standouts deserving special mention for their overall camp performance include Tide Osifeso (a quick and penetrating point guard), Jack Williams (a skilled PF with a potent face-up game), Latrelle Franklin (a fast PG with terrific ball and passing skills), Kendall Lauderdale (a hybrid forward oozing with immense potential),Rex Pflueger (an athletic wing that is a very underrated defender), Kwinton Henson (a tremendous slashing scorer) and Taelin Webb (a polished lead guard that distributes well).
