2009 Pangos Summer Tip-Off Report
by Dinos Trigonis

(July 17, 2009)

The inaugural Pangos Summer Tip-Off was held on July 6 at the Johnson Center on the campus of the University of New Mexico (Albuquerque NM).  The event attracted about 100 prospects including players from California, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas.   Dozens of college coaches were on hand including head coaches Steve Alford (New Mexico) and Marvin Menzies (New Mexico State) as well as assistants from Miami FL, UNLV, Utah, UTEP, Tulsa, Fresno State, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, Denver and UC-Riverside.  Media present included Dinos Trigonis (Fullcourt Press & Nothing But Net), Dave Mathews

(WestCoastHoopReport.com), Clay Harris (Loboland.com) as well as several college web sites like Lobolair.com and PrepNewMexico.com and local TV stations like KRQE-13.

Listed below are several of the event’s standouts:

Cezar Guerrero                   6’0”     2011   St. John Bosco (Bellflower CA)
Dynamic point’s 360-degree spin layup and finish in one game was amazing and oh so acrobatic but it was his consistent torching of the Johnson’s Center’s nets that drew rave reviews from the coaches and media present.  While there are others that have more physical (length or size) “upside” – no lead guard in the West Coast Class of 2011 shoots the rock with more accuracy (and from range) or creates better off the dribble than CJ!   Cezar has transferred back to St. John Bosco from Workman for his junior season.

LaBradford Franklin          6’2”     2010   Great Oak (Temecula CA)

Franklin’s offensive battle with Guerrero in an opening round event game was the talk of the day and resulted in several schools present tendering offers.  Since his outstanding play in Albuquerque, Franklin has quickly become a hot 2010 West Coast PG name with resulting interest from the likes of Cal, Washington State, Fresno State, Arizona, Kansas, San Diego State, Gonzaga, Utah State, Pepperdine, Santa Clara and San Francisco.

Godwin Okonji                    6’9”     2010   Findlay Prep (Henderson NV)

Hard-working post is among the nation’s most underrated interior players and is very improved on the offensive end.  Excellent defender and rebounder has impressive work-ethic and attitude.

Michael Maya                       6’0”     2010   Valley (Albuquerque NM)

Crafty lefty lead guard has a dangerous perimeter stroke and the necessary savvy to be an effective floor general.  One of the West’s top 2010 sleepers at the point guard position.

Kyle Kager                           6’7”     2011   Deerfield Academy (MA)/Flower Mound TX

Agile forward is long and skilled and very quick off his feet.  Very intriguing prospect.

Grant Jerrett                        6’8”     2012   La Verne Lutheran (La Verne CA)

Skilled face-up “four-man” is a young post worth following closely over the next few years.  Grant’s ability to step away from the basket to knock down outside shots makes him a potent inside-out offensive threat.

Clint Bozner                         6’7”     2010   Villa Park (Villa Park CA)

Excellent student has always been a lethal face-up perimeter shooter but his pump-fake drive and dunk off the bounce here showed that he is evolving into a much more all-around player.

Eric Cooper                         6’2”     2013   La Verne Lutheran (La Verne CA)

Very young lead guard’s talents are already drawing the attention of top programs like Arizona, UCLA, USC, Stanford, UNLV and Cal.  “Coop” has incredible poise for a player his age.

Maurice McFarland                        6’6”     2011   El Dorado (El Paso TX)

Well-built swingman has nice ability to slash to the hoop off the dribble.

Long PF runs the floor like a deer and is oozing with upside.

Duncan Schramm              6’3”     2010   Desert Vista (Phoenix AZ)

Scrappy combo-guard has nice “catch & shoot” ability.  Excellent student (3.8 GPA).

Very underrated athlete is also an excellent shooter as well as student (4.0 GPA).

Lawrence Hampton           5’9”     2010   Ironwood Ridge (Tucson AZ)

Speedy point’s quickness presents problems for defenders and can also knock down perimeter shots.

Bruce English                     6’1”     2011   La Verne Lutheran (La Verne CA)

High-scoring combo-guard (in the Eddie House mold) is hard to contain off the dribble.

Parker Dalrymple               6’9”     2010   Buena (Sierra Vista AZ)
Center with size has impressive agility and has a soft touch around the cup.

Chris Sidorakis                   6’2”     2010   Jenks (Tulsa OK)
Perimeter marksman has range on jump shot.

Marek Oleniski                    6’8”     2010   Roswell (Roswell NM)
Strong forward has a nice skill set.  Impressive student too (3.6 GPA).

CJ Cooper                            5’11”  2011   La Verne Lutheran (La Verne CA)

Recent San Diego State commit is a heady PG that can connect with regularity from the perimeter.

Christian Garrett                 6’4”     2011   Campbell Hall (North Hollywood CA)

Lefty off-guard is a slashing scorer with improved perimeter range.  Very good student (3.5 GPA).

Xavier Jones                       6’7”     2011   La Verne Lutheran (La Verne CA)

Raw but physical PF is active on the glass.

Corey Walker                       6’3”     2010   Santa Monica (Santa Monica CA)

Underrated combo-guard can really defend and can score in a variety of ways.
