2009 Fullcourt Press Spring League: Report I

(March 12, 2009)

The 2009 Fullcourt Press Spring League has been in full swing the past two Sundays at Cabrillo HS (Long Beach CA) and has consisted of 10 individual (“Select”) teams as well as 20 club (“Elite”) squads such as Belmont Shore, Los Angeles Rockfish, California Supreme, Team Odom LA, Branch West Elite, Cal Select, NOC Stars, CABC, Belmont Shore Up & Coming, B3 Elite and Gamepoint.

There are many talented players participating.  Below are several those top performers:

Deonta Burton                                6’2”     2010   Centennial (Compton CA)

Strong, athletic and physical combo-guard has real ability to make plays at both ends and has been one of the most impressive players in the league so far.  Burton did not play his junior season due to eligibility issues so coaches did not have a chance to witness his talents recently but this assertive player could be among the top national surprises this spring and summer.

Jordan Hamilton                             6’7”     2009   Dominguez (Compton CA)
After sitting out this past year when he failed to gain his fifth year of HS eligibility, Hamilton wasted little time getting ready for next month’s Jordan Brand Classic by scoring 35 points including game-winning score last Sunday.  Hamilton ranks with the most prolific scorers to come out of Southern California this decade.

Cezar Guerrero                               6’0”     2011   Workman (City of Industry CA)

Quick lead guard with deep three-point range is an underrated passer.  CJ continues to impress on-lookers with his vast skill package although a few critics still remain who question his decision-making.

Justin Brue                                      6’4”     2009   Bishop O’Dowd (Oakland CA)
Athletic defender has great intangibles and is an excellent student.  One of the West Coast’s top sleepers also has a underrated outside touch.

LaBradford Franklin                      6’2”     2010   San Diego (San Diego CA)
Terrific shooter has really improved his ability to score off the dribble.  Playmaker sat out this past year after transferring from Temecula CA area.

Thurman Woods                            6’5”     2009   Dominguez (Compton CA)

Montana signee was another top prospect that missed this past season due to eligibility issues but came out last Sunday and showed why he was a touted 2009 prospect – hitting mid-range shots with regularity as well as locking down opponents on the defensive end.

Michael Wilder                                 6’2”     2009   Wilson (Long Beach CA)

Aggressive lead guard defends like Pittsburgh Steeler Troy Polamalu and is a very underrated scorer.  Great student is also a promising volleyball prospect.

Bak Bak                                            6’10”  2009   Village Christian (Sun Valley CA)

Cal signee is active around the glass and has a huge upside.

Colin Borchert                                6’8”     2009   Mountain Ridge (Glendale AZ)
Agile forward has ability to finish above the rim.

Kevin Mulloy                                    6’7”     2010   Oxnard (Oxnard CA)

Athletic combo-forward attacks the rim off the bounce.

Jordan Salley                                  6’7”     2010   La Verne Lutheran (La Verne CA)

Slightly undersized but strong and athletic PF can finish with regularity and has a soft touch in the paint.  Craig Smith-type post.

Byron Wesley                                  6’4”     2011   Cajon (San Bernardino CA)

Promising swingman is a pesky defender and has a natural ability to slash to the basket and use the glass effectively to score.

John Ryan                                      6’8”     2010   El Segundo (El Segundo CA)

Bruising postman can score block-to-block and is a physical defender.

Frankie Edwards-Eteuati             6’8”     2010   Cathedral (Los Angeles CA)

Very improved “big” with a high potential ceiling is the son of former Long Beach State 49’er Frank Edwards.

Donovan Jackson                         6’3”     2009   El Toro (El Toro CA)

Versatile wing is a very good student with an impressive basketball IQ.  UC-Riverside is among the schools showing interest.

Michael Avery                                  6’5”     2012   Crespi (Encino CA)

After creating plenty of buzz (both positive and negative) when he committed to Kentucky as an 8th grader, Avery responded with an excellent freshman season this past year.  Avery has a nice feel for the game and can knock down outside shots.

Christian Frankling                        6’4”     2010   Gardena (Gardena CA)

Athletic slashing scorer is one of SoCal’s most underrated 2010 sleepers.

Kurt Davis                                        6’5”     2010   Centennial (Compton CA)

Wing with size has made a nice impression on us these first two weeks of the league.

Garrett Frick                         6’7”     2009   Santa Monica (Santa Monica CA)

Hardworking combo-forward has ability to extend defenses with his 3-point range.  Getting interest from the likes of Army and Air Force.

Clint Bozner                                     6’7”     2009   Villa Park (Villa Park CA)

Scoring forward with legitimate perimeter range had to sit-out his junior season due to his transfer back to Villa Park.

RJ Farrell                                          6’4”     2009   Villa Park/Villa Park CA)

Skilled off-guard has nice range on jump shot and is a tough competitor.

James Montgomery                       6’4”     Jr.       Santa Monica (Santa Monica CA)

Active wing defends with passion

David Schwartz                              6’7”     2009   Huntington Beach (Huntington Beach CA)

Rugged rebounder is physical down low.

Shaun Norum                                  6’3”     2009   Los Alamitos (Los Alamitos CA)

Cerebral wing can knock down perimeter shots.  Very good student.

Clayton Ragsdale                          6’2”     2010   Brea-Olinda (Brea CA)

Savvy playmaker has nice pull-up jumpshot.  Excellent student.

Corey Walker                                   6’3”     2010   Santa Monica (Santa Monica CA)

Skilled wing is one to keep an eye on in SoCal’s 2010 class.

Garrett Jefferson                            6’4”     2009   Mayfair (Lakewood CA)

Wiry and athletic off-guard is a dangerous slashing scorer.

Christian Verdugo                         6’2”     2010   Cabrillo (Long Beach CA)

Underrated 2010 point prospect has an impressive basketball IQ as well as an accurate jump shot.

Christian Garrett                             6’4”     2011   Campbell Hall (North Hollywood CA)

Creative wing did not see much action this year after transferring from Harvard-Westlake, but has shown confidence in his jump shot here so far as well as being an improved defender.  Very good student.

Jovan Pearson                               6’5”     2011   Cabrillo (Long Beach CA)

Improving combo-forward plays hard on the defensive end.

Roschon Prince                             6’4”     8th        Hughes MS (Long Beach CA)

One of the nation’s best 2013 prospects, Prince is a competitor on both ends that makes plays.

Nick Colletta                                    6’4”     8th        Western Christian IS (Glendora CA)

Another excellent 2013 prospect has a dangerous 3-point stroke.

Josh Ramirez                                  6’3”     2012   Chino (Chino CA)

Young wing has nice range on his jump shot.
