2009 Pangos All-American Camp: Report II

by Dinos Trigonis

(June 11, 2009)

The 7th annual Pangos All-American Camp presented by Pit Bull Energy Drink was held May 29-31 @ Cabrillo High School (Long Beach CA).  The dynamic Dave Miller (former New Orleans Hornets Assistant Coach and current Fox Sports Net analyst) was again on hand as the "Lead Camp Skills Instructor".  As has been the case in past years, a large contingent of national/regional media and scouts attended including Dave Telep & Evan Daniels (Scout.com), Jerry Meyer (Rivals.com), Brick Oettinger (Prep Stars and ACC Journal), Clark Francis (Hoop Scoop & Maxx Athlete), Frank Burlison (Long Beach Press Telegram), Van Coleman (Hoopmasters.com and MaxxAthlete), Rob Harrington (Prep Stars & USA Today), Joel Francisco (ESPN.com), Aggrey Sam (Slam Magazine), Patrick Stanwood (Nothing But Net Magazine & Hoopmasters), Greg Hicks (Scout.com),

Josh Gershon (GOAZCats.com/Rivals), Dinos Trigonis (Fullcourt Press and Nothing But Net Magazine), Ronnie Flores (ESPNRise.com), Dave Keefer & Dave Rogahn (California Preps/Rivals), Etop Udo-Ema (Fullcourt Press & Hoopmasters), Brian Rothmuller (USCHoops.com), Dave Nahabedian (Networx), Matt Rodriguez (BallisLife.com), Gerry Freitas (Hoop Review), Paul Dean & Roy White (West Coast Hoops Report), Anthony Ray (Arizona Preps & West Coast Hoops Report), Marc Maggard (Roundball Recruiting), Jason Hickman (CBS/Max Preps), Gary Randazzo (Wildcat Sports Report), Sean Ceglinsky (Nothing But Net Magazine), Victoria Sun (Nothing But Net Magazine), Aran Smith (NBADraft.net), Webb Wellman (One Entertainment), Thom Jones (TJ Sports), Chris Karpman (ASUDevils.com), Rob Taylor (Buckeye Prep Report), Bob Miller (TheBootLeg.com), Neal Nieves (Coast2CoastRecruiting.com), Nick Koza (SportsAmp.com), Scott Kurtz (Kurtz Photo) and Jamie Calsyn (ICON Sports Media).  This year's "cream of the crop" games were filmed by BallisLife.com (with Pat “Straw” Pratt doing the “play-by-play” and Schea Cotton doing the “color”) and will be made available

via webcast in the near future.  “Cream of the Crop” Player/Game stats are available online at CaliforniaPreps.com    Additionally Pac-10 officials Bruce Hicks and Frank Harvey held their Hicks/Harvey Officials Clinic in conjunction with the camp which resulted in a first-class effort by the three-person crews that worked the games.  Last year’s Pangos Camp standout and 2009 McDonald’s All-American Michael Snaer (Florida State signee) and camp guest speaker Steve Lavin (ESPN) were present to hand-out camp awards at the conclusion of the event.

This year’s affair may have been the deepest talent-laden camp in the history of the event as there were several serious 2010 McDonald’s All-American Game candidates as well as the #1 prospect in the nation present.  In the Top 50 Game it was the White Squad defeating the Blue 77-66 in a contest that featured several high-major players.

In this report (Part II) we will highlight the players that were chosen to the Top 50 “Cream of the Crop” Game:

Nick Jacobs                                           6’8”         2011        South Atlanta (Atlanta GA)

After spending 2 years as a HS understudy to Derrick Favors, Jacobs has blossomed into an excellent post player in his own right.  When I first laid eyes on Jacobs last October at the Pangos All-South Frosh/Soph Camp in Atlanta, he was primarily a “run and jump” athlete who slashed to the basket on the offensive end.  Seven months later, Jacobs’ body has filled out and he is now comfortable and very effective with his back to the basket.  Nick was one of the stars of the Top 50 Game – scoring 14 points (on 7-11 shooting) to go along with 4 rebounds.

Keaton Miles                                         6’6”         2011        Lincoln (Dallas TX)

Slithering swingman has very nice ability to slash to the hoop and the long arms necessary to be a smothering defender.  A herd of Big 12 and SWC schools are already in the hunt.

Adonis Thomas                    6’7”         2011        Melrose (Memphis TN)

Active and athletic forward has a nice touch around the cup.  Thomas went to work in the Top 50 Game – scoring 11 points (on 5/9 shooting).  Following his impressive outing here, Thomas earned a spot on the USA 16U squad that will travel to Argentina later this month.

Tony Chennault                    6’1”         2010        St. John Neumann (Philadelphia PA)

Wake Forest-bound PG has the typical savvy you would expect in a Philly playmaker and his 14 points (shooting 50% from the floor) was an impressive way to cap off a very solid weekend.

Cezar Guerrero                      6’0”         2011        Workman (City of Industry CA)

Playing alongside #1 prospect Harrison Barnes on his camp squad, this quick scoring point with a flair for the dramatic was content to be mostly a distributor here as he found Barnes with several nifty assists as well as knocking down the shots he did take at a high percentage.  Guerrero also showed plenty of heart by continuing (against the advise of the camp trainer) to compete after sustaining a serious injury to his shooting hand

on Friday night.   But the pain did not subside and he was forced to get x-rays on Sunday afternoon which cost him a chance to compete in the Top 50 Game.

Phillip Taylor                                         6’0”         2010        Wheeler (Marietta GA)

Crafty PG can really score the basketball and his quick hands allow him to be a pesky defender.  When he learns to be the same quality distributor that he is a scorer, he will be a big-time college point.  Had 7 points/3 assists/3 steals in the Top 50 Game.

Jordin Mayes                                         6’3”         2010        Westchester (Los Angeles CA)

Sharp-shooting guard is not a true point but he does have a very nice feel for the game and can really put points on the board when hot.

Rickey Scott                                          6’3”         2010        Macarthur (Irving TX)

Physical and athletic guard’s robust performance almost earned him a spot into the Top 25 Game.

Dezmine Wells                       6’4”         2011        Word of God (Raleigh NC).

Undersized forward is a tremendous athlete as well as an excellent scorer.  Only a growth spurt away from being an elite player, Wells hit for double-figures in Top 50 Game - scoring 12 points (on 5/7 shooting).

Dominique Carr                    6’5”         2010        JW North (Riverside CA)

Assertive swingman has a nasty streak and was determined here to win the respect of scouts and media with his physical play.  Carr’s performance in Long Beach was good enough to warrant Clark Francis sliding him into Hoop Scoop’s Top 100 for 2010.

Steve Taylor                                          5’9”         2011        Lincoln (Gahanna OH)

Quick PG may not have great size, but he does have high-major savvy and passing ability.  Taylor is an “extension of the coach” on the floor and has impressive intangibles (attitude, leadership, work ethic, etc.).

Aaron Bright                                         5’11”       2010        Bellevue (Bellevue WA)

Cerebral pure point understands what it takes to be a winning floor-general.    Bright’s game-high 7 assists with only 1 turnover was an example of all-star efficiency as well as good basketball.  Very good student.

Antonio Barton                     6’3”         2010        Lake Clifton (Baltimore MD)

Barton (a late addition to the camp) was one of the event’s top surprises. While his brother Will already has an elite national reputation, Antonio showed here that he can ball on a high level himself.  While nabbing his brother Will early was a no-brainer, Memphis may have also got a real steal in Antonio when the duo committed to Josh Pastner’s program recently.

Quddus Bello                                        6’4”         2011        Westchester Country Day (High Point NC)

Athletic pogo stick did not have one of his best weekends, but his enormous upside makes him a 2011 prospect well worth closely monitoring.

/i/m All American/Yannick_Attanga.jpg

Darius Nelson                       6’5”         2011        Sheldon (Sacramento CA)

Kris Johnson-type (former UCLA star and son of Marques Johnson) swingman has a knack for the ball and the strength to get to the basket.   Darius (younger brother of former Duke star and current Chicago Bull DeMarcus Nelson) had a solid outing (8 points/7 boards) in the Top 50 Game.

Ben Vozzola                                           6’4”         2010        Centennial (Las Vegas NV)

Thin wing is very skilled and has the competitive attitude necessary to be a factor at the next level.

Allen Crabbe                                         6’5”         2010        Price (Los Angeles CA)

Cal commit is a wing with size that has a silky perimeter touch.

Jordan Burris                        6’6”         2010        Stockdale (Bakersfield CA)

Sleeper wing has excellent all-around talent and a player whose name will be talked about a lot in July.

Deonte Burton                      6’2”         2010        Centennial (Compton CA)

Athletic combo-guard may have had the ESPN Sports Center play of the Top 50 Game when he caught a lob off the break and flushed it with a tomahawk slam.

LaBradford Franklin                             6’2”         2010        San Diego (San Diego CA)

Smooth combo-guard has a feathery touch from 3-point range.  Franklin will attend elite camps at Gonzaga and Virginia Tech later this month.

Jordan Salley                                        6’7”         2010        La Verne Lutheran (La Verne CA)

Strong and physical PF doesn’t mind being a blue-collar worker down low and he has the requisite athleticism to jam it on you if you give him a step.  Salley will attend Cal’s elite camp this month.

Jonathan Davis                     6’7”         2011        Simi Valley (Simi Valley CA)

Polished young forward has a very nice inside-outside game with the potential to be a high-major swingman.

CJ Fair                                    6’8”         2010        Baltimore City College (Baltimore MD)

Syracuse-bound forward is still not 100% healthy but showed enough of his talent here to confirm why Syracuse offered him a scholarship early in HS career.

Winston Shepard                  6’7”         2012        Hightower (Missouri City TX)

Super young forward has the potential to a Top 10 talent.  Father Winston Sr. played at Texas in mid-1980s.   Winston was solid in the Top 50 Game (5 points/6 rebounds).

Doug McDermott                  6’7”         2010        Ames (Ames IA)

Skilled forward has really improved as of late and his steady progress has some scouts thinking about his possible ability to play at the mid-major-plus level or higher.

Yannick Attanga                   6’8”         2010        Beasant School (Ojai CA)

Bouncy BF is a physical rebounder (had 7 boards in Top 50 Game) with ability to finish with regularity in the paint.  Among the best 2010 post prospects in the West.

Grant Jerrett                                          6’8”         2012        La Verne Lutheran (La Verne CA)

Great young “big” has excellent fundamentals down on the block and the “growth plate” to develop into a sought after high-major recruit.

Ronnie Stevens                    6’8”         2011        Serra (Gardena CA)

Lefty power-forward runs the floor well and has an underrated face-up jump shot from 10-15 feet.

John Bohannon                   6’9”         2010        Lancaster (Lancaster TX)

Long post player is extremely agile and has the potential to a potent shot-blocker at the next level.

Darrell (DJ) Haley                  6’11”       2010        Palmdale (Palmdale CA)

Center with terrific length isn’t always consistent but the significant upside is impossible ignore in light of his terrific grades, solid work-ethic and his passion for the game.

High-octane scorer just gave a verbal to Vanderbilt.

Impressive 8th grader turned heads here and is a name for the future.

Athletic wing can really get to the cup off the bounce and is receiving Pac-10 interest.

Eric Cooper Jr.                      6’2”         2013        La Verne Lutheran (La Verne CA)

Sky is the limit for this skilled guard that is poised way beyond his young years.  Father Eric Sr. (who will be his HS coach) was an exceptional athlete (40 inch vertical) that played at Arizona and UT-San Antonio after a great HS career at Banning (Wilmington CA).
