Holiday Classic: Report II

by Dinos Trigonis

(December 18, 2009)

This year’s Bishop Gorman Holiday Classic is being held December 17-19 at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas NV.  The 3rd version of this event has attracted 32 teams from all across the USA as well as squads from Germany and Australia.  Media/scouts present on the 2nd day included Dinos Trigonis (Fullcourt Press & Nothing But Net), Paul Dean & Roy White (West Coast Hoops Report), Gerry Freitas (Hoop Review), Sean Ceglinsky (West Coast Hoops Report & Nothing But Net), Dave Nahabedian

(Networx) and Chris Popoola (PremierBall.com) while college programs on hand included UNLV (head coach Lon Kruger), Arizona (head coach Sean Miller), San Francisco (head coach Rex Walters), UCLA, Washington, San Diego, UTEP, Nevada, TCU, UC-Irvine, Cal-State Bakersfield, Wisconsin-Milwaukee and many others.

In part I of this report, we discussed 16 players that played well on Thursday.  Below are several others (including a few repeat offenders) that rose to the occasion on Friday.

CJ Cooper                                5’11”    2011     La Verne Lutheran (La Verne CA)

Although we talked about him in our last report, he is worth mentioning again – especially because his 25 foot jump shot at the buzzer finally finished off a pesky Clovis East squad and propelled his Trojans into tonight’s semi-final contest versus host Bishop Gorman.

Brandon Coleman                    6’7”      2010     Bishop McNamara (Forestville MD)
PF’s dominant play over San Diego Hoover and 6’8” Angelo Chol in a quarter-final match-up (scored 21 points including several monster dunks down the stretch) was the major reason the Mustangs were able to hold-off Hoover 45-42.

Jonathan Lloyd                        5’9”      2010     Gorman (Las Vegas NV)

Jet-quick playmaker’s 27 points helped the Gaels hold off a pesky La Verne Lutheran squad to advance to Saturday’s finals.

Grant Jerrett                             6’8”      2012     La Verne Lutheran (La Verne CA)

Jerrett had a monster game in the semi-finals – scoring 31 points (19/20 from the free-throw line) and grabbing 20 boards but his Trojans came up a short 74-66 to Bishop Gorman.

Deividas Pukis             6’5”      2011     Christian Life Center (Humble TX)

Lights-out shooter poured in 25 points (including three “3’s) in CLC’s 82-70 quarter-final win over Foothill (Henderson NV).

Robert Hunter               5’11”    2010     Bishop Manogue (Reno NV)

Strong point guard is a tough defender and dependable floor general.

Marcus Thornton                      6’3”      2011     Bishop McNamara (Forestville MD)

Slithering wing-guard knows how to make the nets tingle from beyond the 3-point line.

Chris Coleman             6’9”      2011     Christian Life Center (Humble TX)

Massive postman is a force on the boards.

Xavier Grimble             6’6”      2010     Gorman (Las Vegas NV)

USC-bound tight-end is a physical forward that makes his impact felt at both ends of the floor.

Dakarai White               6’6”      2012     Bishop Manogue (Reno NV)

Strong combo-forward can finish above the rim and his upside is worth paying attention to.

Robert Sandoval                      6’0”      2010     Clovis East (Fresno CA)

Heady point guard has an impressive feel for the game and is a pin-point passer.

Ben Carter                                6’7”      2012     Gorman (Las Vegas NV)

Agile PF attacks the glass with regularity and can score in traffic.

Xavier Jones                            6’7”      2011     La Verne Lutheran (La Verne CA)

Assertive power-forward is an excellent student (3.7 GPA).

Dame Ndiaye                            6’5”      2011     Hoover (San Diego CA)

Strong scoring swingman had 25 points in Hoover’s 1st round win over Threatt Academy.  While Angelo Chol gets most of Hoover’s headlines, Ndiaye may be as valuable a player to Ollie Goulston’s program.

Ronnie Stanley             6’7”      2012     Gorman (Las Vegas NV)

Physical rebounder gives maximum effort.  Excellent football prospect.

Nick Colletta                             6’4”      2013     La Verne Lutheran (La Verne CA)

Scrappy wing is a good shooter and terrific student (4.0 GPA).

Augy French                            6’6”      2011     Foothill (Henderson NV)

Active and wiry post rebounds well.

Chris Garcia                             5’10”    2012     North (Torrance CA)

Quick point has a rock-solid handle.

Jay Miller                                 6’0”      2013     La Verne Lutheran (La Verne CA)

Promising combo-guard is a tenacious defender.

Notes from press row:  Former NBA guard Sedale Threatt is coaching a high school team from Australia called Threatt Academy and doing an impressive job coaching his boys from “Down Under”…….Although his team is not playing in this event, former Chaffey JC (Chaffey CA) and Sequioas JC (Visalia CA) coach George Tarkanian (son of coaching legend Jerry Tarkanian) is now the head coach of Bonanza HS (Las Vegas NV).
