by Dinos Trigonis

(June 23, 2008)

The 6th annual Pangos All-American Camp presented by 24 Hour Fitness was held May 30 - June 1 @ USC's Galen Center Pavilion (Los Angeles CA).  The dynamic Dave Miller (former New Orleans Hornets Assistant Coach) was again on hand as the "Lead Camp Instructor".  As has been the case in past years, a large contingent of national/regional media and scouts attended including Brick Oettinger (Prep Stars and ACC Journal), Clark Francis (Hoop Scoop), Frank Burlison (Long Beach Press Telegram and Scouthoops.com), Van Coleman (Hoopmasters.com and CS-TV), Justin Young (Rivals.com and Yahoo Sports), Evan Daniels (Scout.com), Rob Harrington (Prep Stars & USA Today), Joel Francisco (ESPN.com), Greg Hicks (Scout.com), Josh Gershon (GOAZCats.com/Rivals), Dinos Trigonis (Fullcourt Press and Hoop Scoop), Ronnie Flores (Student Sports), Chris Karpman (ASUDevils.com),  Ben Bolch (Los Angeles Times), Dave Keefer, Brandon Tatera and Dave Rogahn (California Preps/Rivals), Etop Udo-Ema (Fullcourt Press & Hoopmasters), Alan Utter & Bob Jacoby (Hoop Scoop), Brian Rothmuller (USCHoops.com), Tracy Pierson (BruinReportOnline.com), Dave Nahabedian (Networx), Matt Rodriguez (BallisLife.com), Jonathan Durden (HoopMixTape.com), Jim Hlavac (DraftExpress.com), Mark Tennis (Cal-Hi Sports), Jack Pollon (Los Angeles Daily News), Dan Woike (Troyhoops.com), Gary Randazzo (Wildcat Sports Report), Sean Ceglinsky (Los Angeles Times), Victoria Sun (Los Angeles Times), Nick Koza (SportsAmp.com), Scott Kurtz (Kurtz Photo) and Jamie Calsyn (ICON

Sports Media). This year's "cream of the crop" games were filmed by BallisLife.com (with Pat Pratt doing the “play-by-play” and Van Coleman doing the “color”) and will be made available in the near future.  “Cream of the Crop” Player/Game stats are available online at CaliforniaPreps.com    Additionally Pac-10 officials Bruce Hicks and Frank Harvey held their Hicks/Harvey Officials Clinic in conjunction with the camp which resulted in a first-class effort by the three-person crews that worked the games.  Last year’s camp standouts and 2008 McDonald’s All-Americans Brandon Jennings (Arizona signee) and DeMar DeRozan (USC signee) were present to hand-out camp awards at the conclusion of the event.

In the last report (Part I) we highlighted the players that were chosen to the Top 25 “Cream of the Crop” Game.  In this report (Part II) we will highlight the players that were chosen to the Top 50 “Cream of the Crop” Game as well as other notable players at the event.

“Cream of the Crop” Top 50 Game Selections

Colin Borchert                      6’8”     2009    Raymond Kellis (Glendale AZ)

Athletic forward is comfortable attacking the rim or knocking down opportunity jump shots.  High-major prospect is a Top 100-caliber player that will be in high demand this July.

Derrick Williams                    6’7”     2009    La Mirada (La Mirada CA)

Skilled offensive threat is one of the West Coast’s top high-major sleepers.  Showed well (16 points - on 7/9 shooting - to go along with 6 boards) in the Top 50 game.

Daniel Alexander                  6’8”     2010    Dripping Springs (Dripping Springs TX)

Fast-rising 2010 prospect has a very nice feel for the game and is a deceptive athlete.  One of the revelations of the camp.  Texas A&M, Marquette and Baylor are among the growing number of schools turning up the recruiting heat.

Jeremy Olsen                        6’10”   2009    Collins Hills (Lawrenceville GA)

Utah-bound center is a hardworking interior player that brings his lunch pail with him every time he steps foot on the court.  Never complains or whines about lack of touches.   Olsen’s toughness and unselfishness drew praise from his camp coach Kool-Aid Perry.

Marcus Ruppel                      6’7”     2009    Deer Valley (Glendale AZ)

One of the camp’s top surprises, Ruppel reminds me of former UCLA star and current Golden State Warrior Matt Barnes – an athletic combo-forward with excellent range on his jump shot.

Chris Cunningham               6’9”     2009    Diamond Ranch (Diamond Bar CA)

Very solid post-forward is a blue-collar horse in the paint that does an impressive job positioning himself for rebounds and scoring opportunities.  Good student.

Alec Williams                         6’6”     2009    J Serra (San Juan Capistrano CA)

Built like a defensive end, Williams (a recent San Diego State commit) has a pure stroke that he executes with great confidence within 20 feet as well as a surprising vertical bounce.

Godwin Okonji                      6’9”     2010    Findlay Prep (Las Vegas NV)

Long and agile forward has improved ability off the dribble and the athleticism to make an impact on both ends of the floor.   Immense potential will make him a 2010 prospect in much demand.

Phillip Taylor                         6’0”     2010    Wheeler (Marietta GA)

Clever point has a shifty handle and is a crafty scorer.

Robert Smith                         6’0”     2009    Perris (Perris CA)

Speedy PG has a great first step that allows him to beat defenders off the dribble with regularity.

Justin Cobbs                         6’1”     2009    Bishop Montgomery (Torrance CA)

Solid as a rock floor-leader makes plays at both ends and has a very improved perimeter shot.  Very good student.

Tyrone Garland                     6’1”     2010    Bartram (Philadelphia PA)

“Shake-and-bake” playmaker has an excellent handle and the typical Philly basketball IQ you will find from a point guard from the City of Brotherly Love.

Tarik Muhammad                  6’2”     2009    Norcross (Norcross GA)

Smooth lead guard is efficient in transition and a legitimate on-ball defender.

James Blasczyk                    7’0”     2008    Friendswood (Friendswood TX)

Center with great size moves very well and can score on the block.  James (who originally signed with TCU but was later released) was scheduled to go to New Hampton Prep this fall and re-classify to 2009 but Texas A&M made a late push this month and nabbed Blasczyk for 2008.

Brandon Reed                       6’3”     2009    Whitfield Academy (Mableton GA)

Athletic shooting guard is an excellent defender.

Quddus Bello                                    6’3”     2011    Westchester Country Day (High Point NC)

Cerebral combo-guard makes few mistakes and is a dependable ballhandler.

Shaquil Barber                      6’0”     2009    Griffin (Griffin GA)

Quick point has a great looking jump shot.

Jalon Kendrick                      6’6”     2010    SW Atlanta Christian (Atlanta GA)

Young wing with nice size has the potential to develop into a big-time high-major scorer.

Stephon Heard                      6’6”     2009    Jordan (Long Beach CA)

Very athletic swingman excels in transition and is a very aggressive defender.

Corey Stern                           6’7”     2009    Rainier Beach (Seattle WA)

Stern is a skilled forward that can score block-to-block and is a dependable rebounder.  Denver CO native recently moved to the Emerald City.

Devonte Elliott                      6’8”     2009    Paramount (Paramount CA)

Long combo-forward is an intriguing prospect with very impressive face-up offensive skills.

Physical PF competes on every play.

Active defender is a capable slashing scorer.

Silky shooter is a lefty with high-major potential.

Tyler Sugiyama                     5’10”   2009    New Trier (Winnetka IL)
Solid floorleader with a high basketball IQ (and great grades) had to miss Top 50 game to catch a flight back home.  Very good ballhandler has excellent court vision.

Other Players of Note

Jordan Salley                                    6’7”     2010    La Verne Lutheran (La Verne CA)
Physical post gives 100% on each possession.  Very good post scorer and tough rebounder.

Underrated multi-dimensional perimeter player will be closely watched this July.
