Guards Rule Supreme at

2008 Fullcourt Press All-Frosh/Soph Camp: Part I

by Dinos Trigonis

(October 9, 2008)

The 8th annual Fullcourt Press All-Frosh/Soph Camp was held at Cabrillo HS (Long Beach CA) this past weekend (October 4-5), featuring 160-plus top 2011 and 2012 players (along with a few talented 2013 ballers) from California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, New Mexico, Alaska, Oklahoma and North Dakota.  The camp began with the customary terrific instruction by former NCAA D-I and NBA assistant coach Dave Miller and continued with four competitive rounds of games that showcased the depth of the young talent present.

Media/scouts present included event director Dinos Trigonis (Fullcourt Press & Hoop Scoop), event director Etop Udo-Ema (Fullcourt Press & Hoopmasters), Frank Burlison (Long Beach Press-Telegram & Scouthoops.com), Ronnie Flores (ESPNRise.com), Greg Hicks (Scouthoops.com), Joel Francisco (ESPN.com), Gerry Freitas (Hoop Review), Dave Keefer, Jack Nelson & Dave Rogahn (CaliforniaPreps.com), Dave Nahabedian (Networx), Matt Rodriguez (BallisLife.com), Chris Hurst (ArizonaPreps.com) and Nick Koza (Sportsamp.com).  Phoenix Suns GM Steve Kerr was also in attendance watching his son play.

The camp’s top 50 players were selected by the camp staff and media present and were showcased in the two “cream of the crop” games held at the conclusion of the event.  In the Top 25 Game, it was the White squad

outlasting the Black team 151-149 in OT.  Video of the cream of the crop games will be shown online at:  www.watchthegym.com.

This is the first of a three-part series re-capping the camp.  Please keep in mind that is a very early look at underclass prospects that have much room for future growth and are all “unfinished” products.

In part I of this report, we will highlight the Top 25 selections (listed by alphabetical order):

Top 25 Cream of the Crop Selections
(in alphabetical order)

Michael Avery              6’5”      So.       Crespi (Encino CA)

Skilled wing forward has been under the microscope since he became the youngest player to commit to a major college (Kentucky) as an 8th grader last April.  Avery (just a freshman) is an excellent passer and savvy scorer for his grade.  While it is true that his quickness has room for improvement, he has plenty of time to improve all aspects of his game but more importantly Mike has the work-ethic and drive to do just that and his size 15 shoe size indicates that he may not be done growing.  Severe ankle injury on Sunday morning sidelined him for the top 25 game.

Timothy James Burke  6’7”      So.       Marcos De Niza (Tempe AZ)

One of the surprises of the camp, Burke is a skilled forward with an excellent feel for the game.  Aggressive rebounder (grabbed 9 boards in top game) has good mobility and possesses an impressive face-up game.   Burke has substantial upside and is a quality big worth tracking.

Marcus Byrd                 6’7”      So.       North (Riverside CA)

Active and athletic PF runs floor well and can finish in transition.  Byrd was solid throughout this camp and capped it off by contributing 6 points/5 boards/3 blocks in top game.

Damiene Cain               6’6”      So.       Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood CA)

Strong and physical post can hold down the fort inside and has good hands that allow him to be an offensive threat in the pant.  Uncle was former San Diego State star Marcus Slaughter.  Great kid!

Alex Carmon                6’3”      So.       Poly (Long Beach CA)

Very improved wing has developed a lethal perimeter stroke (scored 17 points in top game).  Athletic and wiry body permits him to be a pesky defender.   Dad (Troy Carmon) is a Long Beach Poly HS star who played college hoops at Colorado State and UC-Irvine.  Good student (3.3 GPA)

CJ Cooper                                5’11”    So.       La Verne Lutheran (La Verne CA)

Solid and dependable point has an air-tight handle and is a fine passer – as his game high 8 assists in the top game shows.  Good student (3.1 GPA).

Dominique Dunning     6’4”      So.       Centennial (Corona CA)

Strong and hardworking wing has always had great intangibles but this lefty has also recently improved his perimeter shot substantially.  Consistently a productive contributor – Dunning was no different here (13 points/10 boards in top game).

Bruce English              6’1”      So.       La Verne Lutheran (La Verne CA)

Bouncy combo-guard can really get to the cup off the dribble.  Potentially big-time scorer had 17 points (on 7/12 shooting) with 4 boards/3 assists here in top game.

Cezar Guerrero             5’11”    So.       Workman (City of Industry CA)

Sensational scoring point has also made great strides in becoming a better all-around lead guard.  While he has still much room for improvement in getting teammates involved and making better half-court decisions, Cezar is definitely a high-major talent that plays with a “killer-instinct” and the crude truth is that he bested every top guard he tangled with here at this camp.  In the top game, Guerrero really turned up the heat on the defensive end and his strong effort of 24 points (on 9/19 shooting) with 7 assists/7 boards/and just 2 turnovers made a strong case for game and camp MVP honors.

Xavier Johnson                        6’5”      Fr.        Chapparal (Temecula CA)

Long and versatile forward had 11 points and a game-high 14 boards in top game.  Etop Udo-Ema (Fullcourt Press & Hoopmasters) has compared this excellent student (3.5 GPA) to a young Lamar Odom.

Brelon Leverette                       6’3”      So.       Westchester (Los Angeles CA)

Scrappy swingman has an Energizer-type battery and is extremely productive and efficient as his 24 points (on 11/12 shooting) and 4 boards demonstrate.  Brelon plays very hard and has a winning attitude on the floor.  Max-effort guy!

Ronquis Lewis             6’5”      So.       Midwest City (Midwest City OK)

Athletic forward rebounds well and really gets after it on the defensive end.

Austin McBroom                      5’10”    So.       Campbell Hall (North Hollywood CA)

Poised floorleader is deceptively quick and a dangerous perimeter shooter.  Excellent at running a team, McBroom can really set the table for teammates (dished out 7 assists in top game).

Shabazz Muhammad    6’3”      Fr.        Gorman (Las Vegas NV)

Very talented frosh wing is a smooth performer with a wide variety of offensive skills.  Shabazz contributed 16 points/8 boards in the top game.  Father is former El Toro HS star and USC player Ron Holmes.

Norvell Pelle                6’9”      So.       Dominguez (Compton CA)

Very long post forward/center is a great shotblocker and an emerging offensive threat.  Very mobile, Pelle patrols the court with a looming defensive presence.  Outstanding upside!  Groin injury kept him out of action in the Top 25 game.

Devon Potts                             6’2”      So.       Gahr (Cerritos CA)

Potts made a strong case for being the top perimeter defender here and his accurate (although somewhat unorthodox) perimeter stroke must be respected by opponents.  Very good student (3.5 GPA).

Dominique Raney                     6’4”      So.       Putnam City (Oklahoma City OK)

Athletic wing guard has a solid frame and a propensity for putting big points on the board.  Raney was impressive here – 22 points (on 8/16 shooting) and 5 boards in the top game.

Xavier Roy                               6’2”      So.       San Diego (San Diego CA)

Strong guard is an effective slashing scorer and a pesky defender.  Roy showed tons of guts by attempting to play in the top game, but his injuries finally got the best of him, sidelining him for the 2nd half of that game.

Wesley Saunders                     6’4”      So.       Windward (Los Angeles CA)

Swift wing forward with a nice athletic physique has intriguing upside.

KJ Smith                                  5’11”    So.       Campbell (North Hollywood CA)
Skinny but skilled PG made plays on both ends of the court all camp long.  Crafty playmaker!

Ronnie Stevens                        6’8”      So.       Serra (Gardena CA)
Very long post player is starting to come into his own.  Arms like a young Sam Perkins allow him to be a legitimate shotblocker and a volume rebounder.  Stevens also showed flashes of a soft touch on his mid-range face-up jump shot.   With continued hardwork, Stevens has the potential to develop into a coveted recruit.

Bryce Thompson                      6’0”      So.       Salesian (Richmond CA)

Savvy combo-guard has a nice pop in his step and is a really good scorer off the dribble.  Emerging athleticism bodes well for future development.  Contributed 9 points/4 assists for winning team in top game.

Michael Thompson      6’2”      So.       Canyon Springs (Las Vegas NV)

Polished lead guard has a great all-around perimeter game.  Thompson had 10 points/4 rebounds/4 assists in top game.

Josiah Turner               6’2”      So.       Sacramento (Sacramento CA)

Strong and savvy guard has a very nice array of skills and solid court instincts, but needs to play harder on a consistent basis to reach his full potential.  Had an efficient 11 points on 4/6 shooting to go along with 5 assists in top game.  Good student (3.0 GPA) recently gave an early verbal to Arizona State.

Judd Welfringer                       6’4”      So.       Basha (Chandler AZ)

Scrappy and strong forward competes on every play and is a blue-collar guy on the boards (pulled down 10 rebounds in top game).  Judd’s versatile skill set also allows him to put points on the board.

Byron Wesley               6’4”      So.       Cajon (San Bernardino CA)

Assertive wing forward really went to work in top game -19 points (7-14 shooting) and 9 boards.  Strong on the glass and confident when attacking the basket, Byron is prospect worth following closely in this class.

Gelaun Wheelright                   6’1”      So        Centennial (Corona CA)

Another top camp surprise, Gelaun is very dangerous scoring off the dribble and can also bury jump shots beyond the 3-point arc.   Wheelright was a big factor in the top game - putting up 19 points (on 6-12 shooting including 3 “threes”) to go along with 4 rebounds.

Donovan Williams                    6’4”      So.       Durango (Las Vegas NV)

Slashing wing scorer impressed scouts with his consistent production all camp long.

Gabe York                                6’1”      Fr.        Orange Lutheran (Orange CA)

Sensational freshman lead guard was sizzling here – scoring a game high 26 points in the top game.  Terrific ability to beat defenders off the bounce, York also has a pure perimeter stroke that extends beyond the three-point line.  Gabe will challenge for top California freshman honors this upcoming season.
