Future Stars of the South on Display at the
2008 Pangos All-South Frosh/Soph Camp

by Dinos Trigonis

(November 13, 2008)

The 3rd annual Pangos All-South Frosh/Soph Camp was held last month (October 11-12) at Meadowcreek HS (Norcross GA). This event featured 160-plus top 2011 and 2012 players (along with a few talented 2013 players) from Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Virginia, Florida, Louisiana, Kansas, Missouri and Ohio.  The camp began with an excellent skills demonstration directed by former D-I assistant coach Drew Catlett and continued with four competitive rounds of games that showcased the quality of the young talent present.  Media/scouts on hand included Evan Daniels (Scout.com), Justin Young (Rivals.com), Patrick Stanwood (Hoop Scoop & Hoopmasters), Dinos Trigonis (Fullcourt Press & Hoop Scoop), Thom Jones (TJ Hoops & Prep Stars), Ron Briscoe (Southeast Regional Basketball Report), Rob Taylor (HoopsReport.com), Ced Canty (Elite 75) and Horace Neysmith (Hoop Scoop).

The camp’s top 50 players were selected by the camp staff and media present and were showcased in the two “cream of the crop” games held at the conclusion of the event.  In this report, we will highlight the players that were selected to the Top 25 game (listed by alphabetical order) as well as list Top 50 Game selections and other notable camp players.

Top 25 Cream of the Crop Game
(in alphabetical order)

Jordan Adams                                6’2”     2012   Central Gwinnett (Lawrenceville GA)

Excellent two-sport athlete (also starts at QB on his HS football team) is effective both slashing to the cup as well as spotting up from the 3-point arc.

Rashaud Bell                                   6’6”     2011   South Atlanta (Atlanta GA)

Active forward is very productive in the half-court set and is a tenacious defender.

Quddus Bello                                  6’3”     2011   Westchester (High Point NC)

Arguably the best “prospect” here, “Deuce” is as good an athlete as there is in the current national 2011 class and his improving skill set bodes well for future “superstar” status.  Elite high major!

DeLante "Bishop" Daniels          6’1”     2011   Word of God (Raleigh NC)

Savvy combo-guard is a very deceptive athlete that can score in a variety of ways.  National-caliber type recruit.

Malcolm Brogdon                          6’4”     2011   Fayette County (Fayetteville GA)

Not blessed with great athleticism, Brogdon is a crafty scorer that is efficient on the offensive end.

Gabriel Dos Santos                       6’3”     2011   Cardinal Gibbons (Coral Springs FL)

Strong and physical wing has range on his jump shot.

Karl Cochran                                   6’1”     2011   Wheeler (Marietta GA)

Athletic off-guard defends with intensity and can really score in the open court.

Michael Gbinije                               6’5”     2011   Evangel Christian (Chester VA)

Extremely athletic wing has a nice mid-range game and a smooth feel for the game.  High-major material.  Michael’s dunk over a 6’7” defender in the Top 25 game was one of the best slams I saw this fall.

Matt Gorski                                       6’10”  2011   Cosby (Richmond VA)

Center with size and impressive skills runs floor well and plays with energy.  Excellent student has made great improvement since we saw him at last year’s camp.

Donta Harper                                   6’6”     2011   Southcentral (Winterville NC)

Athletic swingman with improved ball handling skills has a knack of using his size to post-up smaller defenders inside.

Miles Harris                                      6’3”     2011   Heritage (Conyers GA)

Slashing scoring wing is a solid defender.

Derrick Henry                                  6’2”     2011   Newton (Covington GA)

Physical guard with an improved jumpshot is also an underrated rebounder.

Jonathan Holton                            6’6”     2011   La Salle (Miami FL)

Intriguing forward prospect is long and athletic and has substantial room for further potential development.  One to keep a close eye on.

Roger Hubbard                               5’10”  2011   Sprayberry (Marietta GA)

PG is a pesky on-ball defender and fine passer.

Nick Jacobs                                     6’8”     2011   South Atlanta (Atlanta GA)

One of the top stories of the camp, Jacobs (long an understudy for HS teammate and 2006 Pangos All-South Frosh/Soph Camp MVP Derrick Favors) made a strong case for high-major status here – playing above the rim on both ends of the floor and exhibiting physical skills suited for the ACC and SEC levels.

Tre Leonard                                     6’8”     2011   Wakefield (Raleigh NC)

Massive PF takes up tons of space in the paint and is surprisingly agile for his size.  Leonard is a reliable scorer on the low block and a dependable rebounder.

Dominique McCoy                         6’7”     2011   Meadowcreek (Norcross GA)

Hardworking forward understands the concept of “positioning” himself on both ends of the floor.

Quincy Miller                                    6’8”     2011   Quality Education Acad (Winston-Salem NC)

The term “upside” is an understatement when discussing Miller – another major camp surprise.  Running the floor like a deer, Quincy has soft hands and the requisite footwork to score in the half-court as well as in transition.

Charles Mitchell                              6’6”     2012   Wheeler (Marietta GA)

Undersized but efficient post has a nose for the ball and a blue-collar mentality in the paint.

Jaquez Motley                                 6'0"     2011   Urban Christian Academy (Hinesville GA)

Streaky shooter is an assertive scorer that can beat defenders off the dribble with regularity.

Josiah Moore                                  6’4”     2011   Norcross (Norcross GA)

Wing with size has 3-point range on his jump shot.

E. Victor Nickerson                        6'6”     2011   Paideia (Atlanta GA)

Long combo-forward with a great attitude and work ethic, Nickerson is equally at home with his back to the basket as well as facing-up.  Unofficially visited Virginia Tech in October.

Ike Nwanu                                        6’2”     2011   Westchester (High Point NC)

Rugged scoring wing can shoot the three, score off the dribble and get put-backs inside over taller opponents.

Devonta Pollard                              6’6”     2012   Kemper County (Porterville MS)

Active interior forward showed flashes of an intriguing potential.

Jamar Pope                                     6’3”     2011   Butler (Huntsville AL)

Silky wing has an impressive arsenal of offensive skills.

Jordan Price                                    6’4”     2012   Columbia (Decatur GA)

High-scoring young wing attacks the basket with confidence.  A future star!

Stevie Taylor                                   5’9”     2011   Lincoln (Gahanna OH)

Pin-point passing PG may lack great size but always plays with the heart of a lion and really understands how to lead a team.  Very underrated perimeter shooter displayed excellent poise against intense defensive pressure.

Kevin Ware                                      6’4”     2011   Rockdale (Conyers GA)

Great looking lead guard prospect has both a strong build and impressive athleticism that allows him to get to the rim at will.  Loves to compete (delayed an unofficial visit to Florida in order to attend this camp).  Pro upside.

Damien Wilson                                6’4”     2012   Pebblebrook (Austell GA)

Bouncy lefty creates well off the dribble but needs to increase defensive effort to reach true potential.

Players that were selected to the Top 50 Game include:

5’9” Evan Hymes (Northern Durham/Durham NC/2011), 5’6” Yonel Brown (Berkmar/Lawrenceville GA/2012), 6’2” Rodney Purvis (Upper Room Christian Academy/Raleigh NC/2013), 5’10” Antonio Hopkins (Vashon/St. Louis MO/2012), 5’10” Manzey Miller (South Pointe/Rock Hill SC/2012), 5’11” Mario Stramaglia (Oak Mountain/Birmingham AL/2012), 6’2” DeOndre Haynes (Calera/Calera AL/2012), 6’0” Kevin Kornegay (Milton/Alpharetta GA/2011), 5’11” Marvin Whitt Jr. (Homewood/Homewood AL/2011), 6’2” Darius Johnson (Redemptorist/Baton Rouge LA/2012), 6’0” Nate Bucher (Providence Christian/Lawrenceville GA/2012), 5’10” Paul Dawson (Greater Atlanta Christian/Norcross GA/2011), 6’4” AJ Davis (Greater Atlanta Christian/Norcross GA/2013), 6’3” Chris Bolden (Brookwood/Lawrenceville GA/2012), 6’1” Karriem Simmons (Wheeler/Marrieta GA/2011), 6’1” Josh Swan (Pace Academy/Atlanta GA/2011), 6’4” Kedren Johnson (Marshall County/Lewisburg TN/2011), 5’10” Billy Selmon (Pace Academy/Mableton GA/2011), 6’3” Jabari Bennett (Tri-Cities/East Point GA/2012), 6’4” Shaq Patterson (Magna Vista/Martinsville VA/2012), 6’6” John Smith (North Cobb/Kennesaw GA/2011), 5’10” Chris Jones (Melrose/Memphis TN/2011), 6’0” Daquan Grant (St. Thomas More/Oakdale CT/2012), 6’6” Tyrek Coger (Upper Room Christian Academy/Raleigh NC/2013), 6’0” Madison Jones (Ravencroft/Raleigh NC/2012), 6’2” DeAndre Alston (Evangel Christian/Chester VA/2011), 6’6” Darian Clark (Rockdale/Conyers GA/2012), 6’6” Clint McCullough (St. James Academy/Lenexa KS/2012), 6’6” Davonte Thornton (Osborne/Marietta GA/2012), 6’7” Nick Gorski (Cosby/Richmond VA/2013) and 6’6” Jeremy Watson (Homewood/Homewood AL/2011).
